Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I hope you are doing well in research and health.

With great sadness, I would like to inform you that Dr. Herbert Schweitzer passed away yesterday. Herbert has been suffering in the past couple of years due to Parkinson’s Disease. My last conversation with Herbert was difficult, as he called to informed me that he could no longer talk and our conversation paused many times due to his condition and that this could be our last conversation.

I would like to inform the community of his passing, so we can celebrate his life and contributions to our field, as I know he was very happy and proud to be a member of the Melioidosis Community. I know he enjoyed talking and getting to personally know many members of this community.

I was not provided with any funeral service or contribution information. But, if I find out any information, then I will let you know.

Take care.

With Best wishes and warmest aloha,
Tung

Like so many others I was really sad to hear this news. I knew that Herbert had been ill for a long time but he kept going in adversity and many people would not have known at all. He shared our enthusiasm for melioidosis and was undoubtedly the ‘go-to’ authority on antimicrobial resistance in Burkholderia pseudomallei. But most of all he was just a lovely chap, always good company, and I looked forward to spending time with him at melioidosis meetings around the world. As others have said, he embodied the openness and collaborative spirit that characterises the melioidosis community. He will be greatly missed. My condolences go to all his colleagues, friends and family.

David

Dear Tung,

Thank you for letting us know. I was saddened to hear about Pr Herbert's passing.

He made such significant contributions to melioidosis research and had a profound impact on the scientific community. As a pioneer in the field, he inspired many researchers. My own interest in antibiotic resistance stems in large part from his work. He will be remembered with great respect and gratitude by all who had the privilege of knowing him and benefiting from his research.

My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Tung,

I am so sorry to hear that. I still remember the first time that I met Prof. Herbert. It was when he came to Ubon Ratchathani with a junior from his team, and Prof. Sharon and I had the pleasure of showing him around. From Sunpasitthiprasong Hospital to the scenic views at Tohsang Khongjiam Hotel overlooking the Khong River, through the rice fields and back to the BSL3 facility in Bangkok. It was a memorable journey.

Prof. Herbert's contributions to melioidosis field have been immeasurable. Please convey our deepest sympathies to his family, colleagues and friends during this difficult time.

Kind regards,

Direk

Prof. Herbert will be greatly missed!Although I have never met him in person, I have read his articles, which have been immensely beneficial for our research on the drug resistance mechanisms of Burkholderia pseudomallei. My condolences go to all his  family and friends.

Herbert P. Schweizer, PhD
April 4, 1954, to July 6, 2026
Herbert was a scientist’s scientist: a creative tool builder whose generosity amplified the work of laboratories around the world. His contributions to Pseudomonas genetics included broadly used site-specific recombination systems, shuttle vectors, and practical transformation methods that became foundational tools for microbial genetic analysis. In the melioidosis field, he recognized that Select Agent regulations had created major barriers to basic and translational research on Burkholderia pseudomallei. He addressed that problem directly by constructing Bp82, an attenuated B. pseudomallei strain with a defined metabolic defect, and by helping secure its exclusion from Select Agent requirements. As a result, Bp82 could be handled under more accessible biosafety conditions and became an essential enabling reagent for research on pathogenesis, therapeutics, and vaccine development. Herbert did not simply build these resources; he shared them broadly, reflecting a deep commitment to advancing the field and, ultimately, global health.
Herbert Paul Schweizer built an extraordinary international career in microbiology that spanned more than four decades and shaped the fields of bacterial genetics, antimicrobial resistance, and infectious diseases. He earned his B.S. in Biology in 1979, M.S. in Microbiology in 1981, and Ph.D. in Microbiology in 1983, summa cum laude, all at the University of Konstanz in Germany under the mentorship of Wolfgang Boos. Following research appointments at the University of Konstanz, the University of North Dakota, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and the University of Michigan Medical School, he joined the University of Calgary in 1989 and later moved to Colorado State University in 1995. At Colorado State, he rose to Professor, served in major leadership roles, including Associate Department Head and Co-Director of the NIH-funded Rocky Mountain Regional Center of Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases Research, and established one of the world’s leading programs in the molecular genetics of Gram-negative bacterial pathogens. In 2014, he was recruited to the University of Florida as a Preeminence Professor of Microbiology, where he continued his influential work on bacterial genetics, antimicrobial resistance, and Burkholderia biology. He later joined the Pathogen and Microbiome Institute at Northern Arizona University where he remained scientifically active, collaborative, and productive through the end of his career. Across these institutions, Herbert combined exceptional scientific creativity with generous mentorship and service. He published more than 250 peer-reviewed papers, developed genetic tools that are now used worldwide, served on numerous NIH study sections and international advisory boards, and was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology in recognition of his enduring contributions to the discipline.
Herbert was also a generous colleague, mentor, and friend. He gave freely of his time, reagents, ideas, and expertise, and he took genuine pleasure in helping others succeed. His scientific legacy will continue through the tools he created, the students and colleagues he mentored, and the research communities he strengthened. He made a lasting impression on all who worked with him and will be deeply missed.
The Herbert P. Schweizer Memorial Student Award has been established in Herbert's memory.
