I'd heard of this practice before, but hadn't heard of any Melbourne
examples until now.
Does anyone know what the fake streets were called? Or where they were?
Yes. I use a Melway.

Sut beriously, I do have an old UBD but they just are simply not as good as
the Melway(s).

Yes.
Melway at home and a little Gregorys one when out.
The former is too bulky to cart everywhere.
Isn't the UBD supposed to be the official AFL directory due to a sponsorship
deal?

Why? We bought a UBD one recently. It cost about the third of the price
of a Melway. Comparing it with the Melway that it replaced, I can't see
anything about it that would make it an inferior product.

No. At Cole.

So when someone tells you to meet them on map 68 F5, what do you do? :-)
Daniel
Good grief. Other than so money can exchange hands, why would there be an
official AFL street directory?
Daniel
I have to admit it has been a long time since I have seen a UBD. I looked
at one today and they are MUCH much better than they used to be. In fact
their maps look a lot like those in the Melway...hmmm...so who's afraid of
being copied? ;-)
If they really are that much cheaper I would certainly consider using them
in the future.

I wouldn't. I'd say that we'd meet at such and such street. Or, if I
were to give a map reference, I'd specify which book it comes from. They
both have indexes and lists of streets. So, it wouldn't be too hard for
them to figure out where to go, if they aren't familiar with the area in
question.

Bloody newcomers! :)
I've compared. Not impressed with the UBD.
Just try to get public transport route info out of it, for instance. There's
that and heaps of other stuff that Melway has but the others don't.

reference with my address to pick me up, and thinking, gosh my whole life
has been lived on Map 58. It's a good map, but I needed to leave my comfort

Probably not, just winding him up :-)
But a lot of people do offer Melway references with addresses to businesses,
parties etc.
Daniel
Which is still no good if people don't have a current edition as quite often
the map refs change with each new edition.
No they don't. At least, some regional maps changed a few years ago, but
Melbourne and suburbs have always been consistent. Map 68 (my map) in 1970
is the same map 68 today.
This is both a curse and a blessing for Melway: consistency is very good,
but it's led to the problems with the maps all being jumbled up as the
coverage has expanded, so moving east to west, you jump around in the
directory.

You'll have to do better than that, Daniel. There are some things that
wind me up. UBD/Melway map references isn't one of them...
Well, we do have an Emerald. It ain't a city though...
Daniel
Dunno, but it's confirmed here:
http://www.ubd.com.au/index_html?page=directories&product_type_id=1
Naomi Klein's 'No Logo' (which I'm reading now) gives a good explanation of
these sorts of unconventional marketing/sponsorship deals.

older Melways did list it as 'White Brick Road', but that was before Toto
got there.

I chucked out my old Melways and today bought a UBD. I came home to find my street was wider, bigger and
clearer, with nice big trees planted down each side. Not only that but my house had been renovated!
