Talk about a great night, my wife and I were lucky to see what is probably the
last concert featuring most of the original band members of the Beach Boys.
They're all 70, now. Brian Wilson, despite his hard life, did a great job,
backed up, as they all were, by younger backing vocals.
If you're into the BBs, and missed the concert, I'd suggest looking for a
telemovie, "The Beach Boys - An American Family". It may be on Network BT if
you're into that. It's pretty good dramatising of their story.
I've seen the Buddy Holly Story and The Jersey Boys (both twice). Both of these
shows were a mixture of singing (but not singing in conversations which would
shit me). However, for drama, tragedy, humor and simply great music if they did
a similar thing for the BBs, I reckon its ticket sales would make the JBs look
like a single night flash in the pan event.
We stayed at the Hotel Lindrum on Flinders St. From there it's a 2 minute walk
to the tram stop at the corner of Flinders/Batman Ave, or a ten minute walk to
Rod Laver Arena.
We walked there and back, and mingled with Hawks v Swans footy goers and other
BB goers.
They sung all their hits including some lesser known ones, a couple from their
latest album "That's Why God Made The Radio", and a few covers from the 60s such
as Californian Dreamin'.
They played for nearly 3 hours. One of the highlights was watching John Cowsil
(from the 60s/70s family band "The Cowsills") on drums. For a bloke in his mid
50s he could play them as hard as Dave Grohl did when he was Nirvana's drummer.
I bought two Myki Mouse tickets and put $20 each on them. How's this - the
website suggested that I could purchase the tickets from the post office and to
top them up there. However, all they do is sell the tickets. I went to the local
Vline. They don't even sell them, let alone top 'em up. They suggested the
newsagent. So I went there, an lo and behold, yes they sell AND top them up.
Thing is, by the time we got to Melbourne, had lunch at the world's greatest
Italian restaurant, Papa Ginos (Lygon St, Calrton) and checked in we didn't have
time to go for a trip around the city.
Anyway, now I have a ticket. How far will twenty bux get you on the trams? Or
the trains for that matter?
