Ok guys, I promised more and more and more on this hot camera so here is MORE! Just returned from a late night walk and am BLOWN AWAY by the high ISO and usability of the RX1 on the street late at night. The camera is fast, responsive, silent and shooting at ISO 25,600 in B&W is IMO..beautiful.
The smc 55-300 is not known for its autofocus. Accuracy is not the issue, but rather a combination of a very long focus throw and its jarring screwdriven automation makes it less than appealing. This is especially so considering the industry standard is to provide silent autofocus in all lenses, something that Canon and Nikon routinely do even in their most basic kit lenses. While we were unable to pinpoint the last screw-driven lens created by each, it has indeed been a very long time.
Like the 5D, the 5D II is a reasonably quiet camera and the Live View Silent AF modes are especially quiet - though not silent.The 1Ds Mark III is not hard to pick out in the series of bursts (above).It, however, has a non-Live View silent mode that the 5D II does not have.
Conclusion: This is another area where the D780 almost catches up with the two mirrorless cameras. When shooting in Live View on the D780 (looking at the LCD screen instead of through the optical viewfinder eyepiece), the D780 is silent AND has full-frame auto focus, just like a mirrorless camera does at all times. The days of focus-with-the-middle-focal-point then recompose-the-image-to-put-your-subject-outside-the-focal-points are coming to an end. Victory goes to the Z6 and Z6ii, and to a lesser degree, the D780.
