Best way to view topics and threads.

This is the first post in this thread.

The next post will contain three QUICKLINKS for you to click for
optimal viewing of topics and threads using this Google Groups
newsreader.

1a. To set your topic listings for best viewing click here:

The settings are controlled by the number values of those last
switches in the weblinks above.

1b. /topics?gvc=2

makes Google list topics without summaries.

2b. /browse_frm/thread/f5d2a69dcd711138?tvc=1

makes Google list posts in nested threads.

Nested threading is designed so that you can see which post is
responding to which.

In a nested thread, the response post(s) is usually BELOW the original
post to which it is responding.

NEXT UP:

The third post in this thread will give you QUICKLINKS to allow you to
quickly toggle between sorting the post listings either by DATE
(newest to oldest) or by Threaded-REPLY (original post and its
responses).

These two options are currently labeled respectively like so:

3a. Sort-By-Date

4a. Sort-By-Reply

The two options for post-sorting hyperlinks above (3a & 4a) can
currently be found at the top left corner of an open postings thread
window. You will find the hyperlinks (for options 3a & 4a) a few rows
under the Google Group logo/icon and it's written name -- in this
case: megablog).

Those two sorting option hyperlinks are only visible once you click on
a topic and set the viewing options as per 1a, 2a, 1b, & 2b above.

Once you navigate it a few times, you'll get the hang of it.

The settings will remain the way you have them set here until you
delete the google cookies.

Then you'll have to start again and select the options given above.

add the following text to the end of the address in your web browser
address bar:

?scoring=d&

or click the link just below option 3a. above.

also, you can click the hyperlink labeled "Sort-By-Date" in the top
left sidebar window.

remove the following switch info:

?scoring=d&

from end of the long address in the web browser title bar or click the
link just below the 4a. Sort-By-Reply option above.

to bookmark this post to use it as a QUICKLINK settings maker for all
of your Google Groups reading:

5a. Click on "more options" to the far right
of the posters name "$Zero" above --
(it's to the left of the date info on this post).

5b. Click on "Individual Message"

5c1. Copy the addrees in the web browser window bar and paste it
somewhere handy.

OR

5c2. do whatever you normally do to save a window to your favorite
places or bookmark section.

OR

type: GQL in the megablog search window above and then click on
"search this group"

GQL is an abbreviation for:

Google-Quick-Links

Note that everytime you click on a link in a google groups posting
window it opens up a new window which you can then close to get back
to the page withy the other links you need to click to set up the
QUICKLINK settings.

why Google just doesn't allow you to set these permanently (tied into
your Google Groups log-in name settings) is beyond me.

but then again, so are many such poorly-thought-out irritating flaws
in software designs.
