Hi,

As more mobile devices on the market now support high resolution photos it would be useful to add another photo resolution to the existing set in the Meetup API.

Currently in the Meetup API there is a standard resolution of maximum width (or height) of 600px.  This is accessed through the "photo_link" field.

The next step up is the "high_res" field which grabs the photo at it's maximum resolution.  The problem with the "high_res" photos is that some of them are quite large (over 2MB) in size.  Trying to download these large photos especially on a Mobile Network connection (not WiFi) is slow and could consume a large amount of your data plan.

It would be nice to add another set of photo resolutions in between the 600px standard resolution and the "high_res" maximum resolution.  I suggest maybe adding a 720px or (and) 960px set of resolutions.

Any ideas on this or suggestions?

Thanks

Sam

Hi Sam,

At this time, when a user uploads a photo on both on the site or through the api, we scale images at a fixed set of dimensions. These are the ones currently available through the api.

Internally, we are experimenting with dynamic rescaling of images on the fly, but this is not yet available for public clients. This could potentially be an option for you in the future but is not at this time.

Hi Doug,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Server-side dynamic rescaling of images will be ideal.  I'm guessing it will be announced in this group when it becomes publicly available?

Thanks

Having attempted server side image modifications in the past for other applications, I would add that it is not efficiently nimble for large scale or multi-image operations.  Also, the image quality can very greatly depending on the product used to scale the images.  I use the large (not full) size version for the http://photos.houstonphotowalks.com application, and it sufficiently fills the screen with images w/out requiring additional processing.
