Hello,

I'd like to know if the Janus videoroom plugin works as an SFU, MCU or can work as both. I know that the documentation is pretty straightforward on the subject ("This is a plugin implementing a videoconferencing SFU (Selective Forwarding Unit) for Janus, that is an audio/video router"), but in previous posts people talk about a video MCU plugin, and the file mainpage.dox mentions the janus.plugin.videoroom as "a plugin implementing a videoconferencing MCU for Janus, something like Licode". So I'm a bit confused...

Anyone here to help me ?

Thanks a lot,

Robin

It's a SFU. The plugin was incorrectly called MCU at the beginning, hence the confusion.

Hi Lorenzo,

Thanks for the quick response !
Are there any plugins that you know of allowing to use Janus as an MCU ?

The AudioBridge plugin is an audio MCU. There's no video MCU that I know of, right now. We've worked on some custom projects where we implemented a remote MCU the VideoRoom could send videos too, but one could also write a new video MCU plugin to do composition internally.

One more question : do you plan to implement such a video MCU plugin in the near future ? :)

I have used FreeSwitch as Video MCU , pretty easy and straight fwd, but Video MCU is expensive for scaling

It would be quite the task, so unless someone sponsors such an effort, nope, not in our plans.
