He had to fight hard, Dolan says, to get the greenlight, and after several weeks of persuading his superiors, he formed what would soon be called the first non-South Asian kabaddi team in the world. The team comprised of white police officers. Dolan started thinking of forming the team following a prolonged protest in 2002 over racial profiling. As an undercover police officer, he had encountered various layers of the South Asian community and had discovered that apart from cricket, kabaddi meant a lot to the people in the area under his supervision, even to those who were born in Canada [Images]. The kabaddi clubs in the area took themselves so seriously that they went after the athletes from both sides of the Punjab and enrolled them in the tournaments. Now, a 24-minute long documentary Kabaddi Cops, which is becoming a film festival favourite, is celebrating the success of the four-year-old team and its role in trying to address the mistrust and fear the South Asian community had of the Toronto police. It is among the many intriguing documentaries and short films being shown at the current sixth annual Indo-American Arts Council Film Festival in New York. "It is one of the must see films for me at the festival," the bestselling author Salman Rushdie said at his inaugural address at the festival on Wednesday, November 1. "The idea of a bunch of Canadian policemen learning kabaddi in order to integrate with the Asian community is something I wish to see. He also wanted to "see Mahatma Gandhi [Images] appearing for the New York Yankees in Gandhi at the Bat," he said referring to the 11-minute film based on a Chet Williamson story in The New Yorker in 1983. Calling it one of the funniest stories he had read in the magazine, Rushdie said he is convinced the short film "is worth the price of admission." Directed by Greg Cote, a former police officer and private investigator, Kabaddi Cops shows how Dolan went around convincing fellow officers and juniors who knew nothing about the 4,000-year-old sport. Within a year the team began competing in the tournaments and getting their stories in major publications and television shows in Toronto. The community grudgingly started appreciating the police efforts to make inroads and build the bridges, according to Cotes. The police team and the Ontario Khalsa Darbar kabaddi team are looking to set up a permanent kabaddi field. 'The more time you spend learning about another culture,' Dolan, who has become the team coach, reflected in the documentary, 'the more you grow to love it and respect it.' Team captain Constable Dirk Niles says he was afraid to try it out first but took kabaddi as a challenge. 'I never knew it was bare foot, bare back, no mouth guard and running around out on the field,' he said. Community leader Kuldip Kular did not have to wait for long to appreciate the police efforts. 'When the police get involved,' he said, 'it makes our community safe, strong and caring.' As for Cote there could not be a more progressive step ever taken by a Canadian police department than the starting of the kabaddi club. 'I feel the underlying message of Kabaddi Cops is very important in terms of race relations and promoting harmony between the state and diverse communities.' he said in a statement.

Kabaddi 4 The Final Match features the last Kabaddi battle between Kaji and Bamkaji, featuring Miruna Magar, Dayahang Rai, and Saugat Malla. The film depicts the love interest from a female point of view, as well as how former relationships can affect present ones.

When Dayahang Rai returns to the community, his second love engagement begins with Shanti (Miruna Magar), a rural teacher. And, Bamkaji, who is weary of living in the country, plans to go to town, but after meeting Miss Shanti, he reconsiders.

Dhruv was last seen in the 2022 film Mahaan, which also starred Vikram. He sang Odiyamma for the 2023 Telugu film Hi Nanna with Shruti Haasan. Anupama was last seen in Tillu Square in Telugu. She will also be seen in Paradha in the same language, apart from JSK in Malayalam.

Gaumaya is a famous Nepali blogger. Lately, she has been active in promoting Nepali culture and language in different countries of the world through blogging. Earlier, Dayahang Rai, Saugat Malla, Vijay Baral, Buddhi Gurung, Pushkar Gurung and Kavita Ale were signed for the film.

To its credit, Pattathu Arasan has just the right premise for a banging melodrama. The film opens with the venerated village figure and kabaddi player Potthari (Rajkiran). In a sweet black and white flashback, a de-aged Rajkiran shows us how he skipped and manoeuvred his way around on a Kabaddi ground, going on to teach his secrets to many generations of players from his village. But when his love for the sport accidently kills one of his own, his family is torn apart into two. Chinnadurai (Atharvaa) and his mother (a brilliant Radikaa Sarathkumar in yet another mother role) ostracised from the family due to an altercation involving a young Chinnadurai. But when he grows up, he wants to make up for what his impulsive adolescence did to the family. And with kabbadi in its forefront, the opportunities to delve in the genre are ripe. But the film does nothing with it.

Narendra Babu [inset], the director of Kabaddi made news for wrong reasons before the Kannada film released. But all that was forgotten when he silenced all his critics by making a sensible film.

In the first two days when the collections were totally discouraging, we were really worried. But as the response from the media was hugely positive, the film's collections showed improvement from Sunday. This trend of getting encouraging response from the third day onwards is a trend that is noticeable these days.

It was great. Many people who watched the film at PVR told me that they were watching a film like Lagaan in Kannada. That was a huge compliment. Some people told me that they were bored of seeing the same kind of films week after week, and Kabaddi was entirely different.

There were scores of Kabaddi players who watched the film and said that their feelings have been truly reflected in the film. What was encouraging was that all these Kabaddi players said that they would personally promote the film.

We started the film two years ago, and even while the shooting was in progress, there were reports that Kishore was acting in the Tamil film that was also on Kabaddi and he was acting as a Kabaddi coach in that film. He was doing the same role in my film too. I got reports that some of the sequences were similar to what I had written.

I wrote the script many years ago, when I was an assistant director. When I had briefed this script to some of the producers and my well wishers in the industry, they were really skeptical whether the Kannada audience would accept a film which focuses on a desi sport like Kabaddi. Producers were not willing to invest money on a project which introduced me as a director.

But finally when I met my current producers, I was hesitant to tell them the script of Kabaddi in the beginning. So, I narrated the story of a love cum action film. Since there were many partners in the production unit, the story found acceptance by a few of them. Others said that the budget would be huge for making that film and it needed a big star. Then quite hesitatingly I narrated the script of Kabaddi. To my surprise, I found acceptance from all the producers who were all Kabaddi players once.
