We are Magic 5.5 SR3 and in the process of rolling out physician
prescription printing through EDM/RXM. Our hospital supports two
separate Emergency Departments, although the default script printer in
RXM only supports one default printer location. A custom NPR has been
created to print to an HP printer, although the macro to hard code the
printer is not working through RXM. We still get a Print On prompt and
when we choose the printer there is no consistency in printing.

What are other hospitals doing with multiple Emergency Departments to
have the prescriptions print to designated printers? We would
appreciate any assistance with understanding how other sites are set-up.
We would also like to know if others have been able to designate a
drawer to print the scripts to, as well, and how you did this.

Thank you in advance for any responses regarding our multiple facility
prescription printing problem.

Hi Mary -

We just went LIVE with a custom that created a device dictionary in RXM that allows us to match PC to printer for scripts - works great and would make a
great enhancement.

Tell them to refer to task 5188242 for site CCS.

Thanks,
Maura

Mary,

We are routing our prescription printing through the PFS (Patient Flow System) software from Access eForms.  This allows us to customize the format of the prescription, as well as the printer location, by facility without the physician having to choose specific printer(s).  We customized the prescription “output” from Meditech to contain the workstation id and we use that in addition to the location of the patient to print appropriate facility name, address, phone numbers and any other facility-specific information and also to route it to the correct printer based on the workstation that the prescription is entered from.

Their website address is:  www.accesseforms.com

If you have further questions, I’ll be glad to answer them also.

P.S.  We also use this software to print forms (consents, education, etc) based on orders that are placed in Meditech.

Don't have a job, have a purpose - it will bring you happiness!

We have not set up or identified a default printer. Our ER and UC NPR
report is formatted for Thermal Printing which takes the ability to send
a printed Rx to a laser printer, however the provider still needs to
select the correct printer.

Regarding printing to a designated drawer, we added logic to pull paper
from tray 1 then change back to tray 5 , where tray 1 is labeled as tray
2 on the printer and tray 5 is labeled as tray 3 on the printer. Tray
3 became the default tray when added to the printer.

AL START %Z.s witch.tray(1)
AL CLOSE.UP %Z.switch.tray(5)

See KB article 6820 for specifics on how the different trays are
identified.

We recently paid Meditech $4,000 to provide us with an RXM custom that creates a new dictionary that is used to determine which prescription printer to use based on the device the prescription was entered on. Maura Hoag from Contra Costa Health Services implemented the original custom and I simply asked Meditech if we could have the same thing.

Here's how it works...if the device being used is defined in this new dictionary, the system will print to the prescription printer defined in the dictionary without prompting the user for a printer. If the device being used is not in the dictionary, the system will work as it usually does, prompting the user with the default printer defined in the RXM Access dictionary. The custom also allows you to specify different printers for different drug control schedules.

If you want more details, ask Meditech for the specs of RXM task # 5620983. Our facility mnemonic is STL and we're at Magic release 5.61.

Are both EDM departments in the same facility or are they separate ?

I thought you could set the RXM customer parameters (see below) to
either default the printer per facility or location.

If you have only one location (like ER) and need to send RX's for "scheduled drugs" to one printer and unscheduled drugs to another printer,
you can write a rule. Rules did not work well for entering outpatient rx's in clinics because the MD's could be any terminal at any location entering the
RX's. Maura is a hero for getting this done.

You can but if a physician is at a terminal that is not at the location defined in the RXM parameters and he is entering the RX, he may still have to print
it out to a specific printer if you have to have special tamper free paper in the printer. Also, Our outpatient clinic has floors, units, etc. but they do
not really have defined locations which created a problem.
