Has anyone found a good way to document PCAs on the eMAR? How are loading doses documented and if you are documenting shift totals for PCAs how are you doing this?
Thanks for your help.

Hello Becky
We have been charting PCA medication administrations in eMAR for over 3 years and the actual PCA nursing flow sheet information (settings, sedation, pain scores, etc) for over 6 months now. Both are working quite well.
We have staff chart a 24 hour total medication dose given at daily at 6 am and the device is set back to zero by a manual clearing. Staff should also chart any boluses in eMAR and any loading doses given.
Flow sheets are a MT CDS with the same queries as on paper that prompt every 2 hours. We also coined a separate pain score for this charting, called Pain Devices, to help distinguish between acute pain therapy assessment (such as a PRN pain med) and the hopefully more consistent pain level experience associated when a patient is using a PCA at a basal rate or has a peripheral block on board.
Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions at tja...@nebh.org

Theresa,
Are you CS or Magic? If you are CS would you mind sending me some screen shots of the PCS assessment?

Thanks,
