When we have an inpatient that goes to MedSurg after Surgery, our
Pharmacy enters their med orders so that they can be dispensed from an
Omni Cell on the floor. If Surgery is still documenting on this
patient, Pharmacy will get a message that they are locked out of the
record by Surgery. Does anyone see this and how have you dealt with it?

We see this all too often. A MT service issue on this was entered and have
been told that system is working as designed.
If patient needs meds, then we call PACU and ask them to back out of
profile so we can enter orders. Seems to work.

RE: ORM - Meds locked on record

We had the same issue. If your Med Tab is in your Operative portion of the profile, regardless of the nurse being in the med tab or not, there is a lock in PHA.
Two options:
1) Move the med tab to another section of the profile. (not a great solution and one we did not use)
2) We have client server and had a DTS added. This only creates the lock if the nurse is in the med tab. So the chances of PHA and ORM documenting meds at the same time is minimal so the lock rarely occurs now. I can't seem to track down the DTS number but your ORM Meditech specialist should be able to.

Keep in mind that the reverse lock can happen. If PHA is entering orders on this pt and the OR nurse is trying to get into the profile, they will be locked out. But if you are able to add this DTS, the OR nurse will only be locked from entering orders in the med tab.
