Trying to decide if we should invest and load First Data Bank POEM Order
strings to be used with ED and Inpatient discharge prescriptions.
Meditech AOM product page "strongly suggests" that these be loaded vs.
creating your own. Yet I found a KB article that sort of suggested that
due to all the edits required, we may be better off building our own.
Can you share your experiences

thank you

We did buy them. They are not that costly. For the ER though, we didn't really need them because most all of our sigs for there are ONCE (which is what FDB uses). We are working on inpatient CPOE and there they are going to help, but yes, there is a lot of tweaking to do. For instance, they use BID for scheduled and prn orders and the only difference is that the prn field is checked Y. I prefer to use the more obvious sig of BID PRN because I fear that the physicians won't notice the Y and pick the scheduled instead.
Also, you will get things that are a 10 mg tablet with a string of 10 mg daily, that will also have a string of 20 mg daily, even though there is a 20 mg tablet. So, you will have to delete the 20 mg string if you have the 20 mg tablet.
As for AOM, we haven't loaded the strings into RXM yet, but probably will. Our greatest fear would be that the nurse would pick the wrong string, but when they do things like pick Zofran 4 mg IV and enter 4 mg po (you can enter any route in RXM), or like the one today, choose Inderal LA 80 mg capsule and enter in the comments 40 mg - takes 1/2 tablet, then the strings are needed.
One thing though, is to not load strings from your drug dictionary defaults, because you will get a lot of partial strings. We didn't know that we could block these when creating QuickScripts and RXM.

Load RXM POEM strings! How can you maintain them any other way?
