Good evening,

What is the best/safest/easiest way to modify an NPR report currently used in the live environment by staff members all over the hospital?

I have modified a report our hospital staff currently use to produce our sheets of patient labels. I have done so in our test environment and now I am ready to "move" the updated version of the report into live. However, are there any considerations I need to keep in mind before doing so?

Example:
q Are there any issues with renaming the current version of the report in LIVE, and then moving the new version of the report into live with the old report name? Will there be any problems with users menu access if I do a "swap" in this manner?
q Are there any problems modifying a report that is being run as it is being modified? (will I crash the entire system if a registrar attempts to run the label report while I am moving the data fields in the Picture area of the report? Or will it auto update after I hit save and translate displaying the new format the next time it is run?)

Good night and thank you.

Medina

At this hospital, all reports contain the initials of the person who last updated it. So even if I copied someone else's report and then made modifications, the report would now be renamed with my initials so I would never be moving a report from test to live with the exact same name.

I would suggest making the report name slightly different just so this will not be an issue.

Thanks! ☺

Hi Antonio,

When we make a change in Live we send out a notice to all staff members that will be affected with the date and time we are going to make the change, this way the users can hold off running the program for that time, i.e., "Change will occur on 1-20-10 from 9:00am-9:15am".

I always copy the original version of the program to the same name but with a date on the end, example: ADM.PAT.zcus.test to ADM.PAT.zcus.test.011510 in Live then I delete the original version ADM.PAT.test and I move the version I have tested in Test with the same name to Live ADM.PAT.zcus.test(in Test already tested). When you do the move to Live you shouldn't have to re-translate the program it will re-translate when you move it. Hope this helps. I wouldn't try to make changes to a program in Live that the customers are using.

Antonio,
I can make a couple of suggestions.
1. Here we print out ALL NPR reports source code and file in a binder, just to have a hard copy. (Only 2 individuals write NPR)
2. If there are major changes, move original LIVE to TEST including MACROS
3. Copy original LIVE to LIVE renaming
4. Once you've modified the renamed report to your liking, then inactivate&delete original, copy LIVE renamed back to the original.

There's several ways of accomplishing your task.

Thanks,
Joe
