Has anyone who does not have eMAR or POM yet been able to make use of the PENDING function. I just started testing 5.6.1 and I am a little confused
as this seems like it would be a very useful function, but it seems very cumbersome. Has anyone found a way to "turn off" the "enter order as PENDING"
that pops up for every order?
Has anyone found a faster way to remove a PEND status from an order other than the method I have had to use, which is:
Perform an EDIT on the PENDING order, enter all the way down to the PENDING prompt, change the Y to a N and change comments.
After removing the PEND, you have to VERIFY the order.
It seems to me that there could be a shortcut function called RP (remove pending) when just the PEND prompt and comments box would pop up to be
edited. It also seems to me that if an order was originally entered by a user able to enter verified orders and then a pending is removed by a user able to
enter verified orders, it is redundant to go in and have to VERIFY the order again.
Even without eMAR or POM in place this could be a very useful tool, except that removing the PEND status requires so many steps.
I do hope I am missing something and that someone has a better method of working this function - if so, please let me know. Thanks Cindy

Cindy - We are also 5.61, but and not eMAR or POM, but I haven't seen the
pending function. Is there some kind of customer defined parameter that
turns it on or off? Where do you see it and what does it look like.

We have been live with 5.6 for ~ 5 months, and pending works exactly as
you have described. None of our pharmacist are willing to use it
because it is so cumbersome. I think that is a shame, because I see a
real usefullness for it. Also, if you are not using the standard labels
and mar formats, you will have to add the pending flags for them to
print on the label. The quickest way I have found to remove the pending
status is through the VEC routine - then you can remove the pending flag
and verify in one action.

The PENDING function shows up when using Order Sets. (When I noticed
it.) It was added into PHA for POM. Don't see a lot of use since so hard
to change status back to regular.

Here is a quick summary:

Pending Orders Function
Meditech has created an enhancement to allow Orders to be placed in a
"Pending" status. This enhancement is available in 5.6 SR0 and above.
Prior to this enhancement, sites found "work arounds" such as creating a
"dummy drug" in the Drug Dictionary to allow Provider Orders to be
placed in a Pending status. Pending Orders are defined as orders that
are in need of further review/clarification.

With this enhancement, orders may be placed in a Pending status in
Pharmacy during Order Entry or for orders in an Unverified status. Any
user with access to enter orders will have the option to place the order
in a Pending status. Orders entered with a Pending flag will be filed as
Unverified orders. The Pending flag must be removed from the order to
become eligible for Verification. Only users set up with Verification
Access in pharmacy may remove the Pending flag from an order.

Editing Pending Status
If you want to place the order in a PENDING status, enter Y at the
Pending prompt. A pop-up window with a text field appears when you
enter Y at the Pending prompt. If you place an order in a PENDING
status, comments will be required as to why the order is pending (i.e.,
clarification, lab results, etc.). The user is able to view pending
comments on the Rx Print Order.

Inpatient pending orders will appear on the eMAR, but will not be
eligible for the nurse to document against.

To remove an order from its PENDING status, access the Edit Order
routine and change the Y at the "Pending" prompt to N and enter comments
to indicate why this order is being removed from a PENDING status.

BTW, this status will print on MAR and other places.

Hi L'ers,
We are magic 5.5+ and are doing BMV/EMAR and Pyxis for a new client. As
'working as designed' by Meditech ,Override orders charge immediately on
vending, no matter if the pha tool box is set to charge on admin/docum
so all you can do is whether you want the nurse to see/process overrides
for documentation on emar. Meditech says these tool box settings only
apply to profiled orders.

But if the pharmacist puts in a follow-up supporting rx shortly
thereafter for the override the nurse has the potential to document on
that as well, leading to another charge, if billing on admin.

What have you doen to resolve this inconsistency by Meditech in handling
override or profile rx's , for billing by admin/docum?

Thank you! I do not feel like a fool now. It is very cumbersome. I have reported this to our Meditech analyst for what it is worth. If I can get a few
people from different facilities to agree to add their 2 cents worth I will even enter the enhancement request. It would be very useful, but in its current
state it is just another fancy internal paperweight. If an order is entered into pending by a user able to enter verified orders and then removed from
pending by a user able to enter verified orders, there should be no reason to further verify the order. AND you should not have to go into the order and
ENTER all the way down to the last prompt on the page to remove something from pending. There should be a function in PROCESS ORDERS to do this. Thanks

We are using Pending orders for various reasons. We are using eMAR, and it is a very effective tool for communicating to nursing that pharmacy has gotten the order, but something needs clarification.
Without eMAR, I'm sure there are some uses, but you probably already have procedures in place. What I can offer is a better way to remove the pending. Why PENDING = Unverified? I don't know, I don't agree, but it is something we must live with.
So the fastest way to remove a pending is to use VEC- or Verify, Edit, Cancel from process orders. Once in VEC,Go to edit, and mouse click on the pending field and enter a "N". Enter your comment and file. The pharmacist is then immediately prompted with the verify screen.

We are still charging on dispense, but we suppress the Dispense Machine
Vends from the e-MAR.

If the pending orders are unverified, why does it show on eMAR? We have
it set so that unverified orders do not show. Are you saying that the
pending function overrides this parameter?

We are magic 5.5.2, are BMV/EMAR and utilize Pyxis. We do not have the
problem you are describing.

We have our Tool Box Parameters as follows:
BILLING TYPE: ADMIN

DISP.MACH I/F?: Y TYPE: RX
DISP.M.INACT Rx DELAY HRS: 0

Our Customer Defined parameters are:
Disp Machine Order Type - Med: MED

And it becomes even more cumbersome if you are using tech order entry.
They can enter in pending but cannot remove the pending.
And when an unverified user enters the order, how does the checking
pharmacist indicate it has been entered correctly?
The pharmacist can't verify the order without removing the pending.
There is another step here and that is a "verified" pending status that
is not available.

Our techs need to be able to remove the "verified" pending so that they
can process these orders without the pharmacist needing to
confirm/verify the order a 2nd time. When the pendings would be removed
to give the RX active status may be 2 or 3 days later. You are not
going to have the original orders in front of you at that time in any
case to "verify" the order. Also, generally when the pending is removed
it is because it has met the qualifications of the pending comments. So
rather than having to edit the pending comments, why don't they have a
function that you could use such as PCM (pending comments met) that when
answered Y would give the RX active status and when N would DC the
order.

We sent the documentation on all of the pending functionality to our
pharmacy staff and everyone agreed that it is too cumbersome and work
intensive to use and not one of our facilities will be implementing it
when we go live with 5.6 on the 24th pending despite the need for it.

A complete rethink and a complete look at functionality is required by
Meditech before this could be useable. More flexability via access
dictionary and customer defined parameters in how it is used would also
satisfy different user's needs.

Those are my thoughts......and despite numberous conversations with
Meditech during the testing process, I have been unable to sway them at
this point.
