Subject: [MEDITECH-L] Pyxis vs Omnicell
Our health system is currently evaluating Pyxis and Omnicell for both
medication and supply dispensing. I am interested in hearing opinions
from other facilities.
1) Which system do you use for both supplies and medications?
Pyxis.
2) Are you happy with the product(s)? Why or why not?
Yes. While far from perfection, it does almost everything we demand of it. We're not that large of a hospital, 25-bed critical access, 7 Pyxis stations plus the console.
3) Are the interfaces working effectively? Why or why not?
Yes, we use the ADT from Meditech to Pyxis, and we've tested the dispensed/billing interface back to Pyxis. They perform as expected.
4) Does the interface for the supply dispensing machine deplete the
inventory automatically?
We're about to turn that on LIVE (next week), but I'll let the others who use it a lot answer.
5) Do you have more than one vendor within your facilities for these
products? Is it labor intensive to manage more than one vendor's
products?
Just one vendor.
6) Please include any other comments regarding these products and the
interfaces between them and Meditech that you feel would be helpful in
making our decision.
There are things about Pyxis that seem rather primitive, to me. Realize there are things about Meditech 5.61 that seem primitive to me, too! :) I came from a different IT background, and my work in the healthcare industry is often beset by surprise about how it lags behind other industries. The Pyxis reporting is primitive, and the product they gave us to store data endlessly and do queries (Pyxis Reporter) is a piece of, umm, work. Seems like it was built by some small-time software shop. Also, since Pyxis is moving in the direction of not allowing remote access to the console (they used to allow pcAnywhere), well, that's not very handy for offsite research or resets when needed.
But generally, the vast majority of time, Pyxis does what it's supposed to do, is generally easy to work with, and works for us. The tech support line is very good and responsive. They are in Quebec, so some have nice French accents and names.
