Hi All,

We are currently using Magic 5.5 SR2 and planning on using the TALLMAN
LETTERING. Can you please give us your feedback on how you carried out
the change? Any issues that you encountered on reports and printing of
labels etc. Any advice would greatly be appreciated.

We converted a few months ago. We updated any where in our facility that
a generic/trade medication name would appear, so users view it the same
way all the time:

- PHA Generic Name Dictionary
- Omnicell
- McKesson unit dose packaging machine
- All CDSs - NUR, LAB, OE, etc
- OE Procedures Description
- LAB Test Dictionary
- Patient Care Orders, etc.

We had no issues with these changes. P&T and MAC approved without
question, per ISMP recommendations. Pharmacy emailed all exchange
mailboxes, of the changes users would start to see, as it was an ongoing
update over a few weeks.

We are currently in Phase 2 of the project...updating generic names to
lower case and TRADE names to upper case.

Format is: 1. generic/TRADE name + release form [PRN] = generic name
(diltiazem ER, acetylsalicylic acid EC, etc)
2. strength = Strength field
3. dispensing form = Dispense Form field - changed
mnemonics of Medication Form to lower case, as it is the mnemonic that
is pulled, NOT description.

The only letters in the Drug ID that are upper case are tallman
lettering, TRADE names and release forms.

Example of Drug IDs: diltiazem ER 180 mg capsule
dimenhyDRINATE 50 mg/1 mL ampoule
dinoprostone vag.gel 1 mg/2.5 mL tube
EYE STREAM* ophthalmic 30 mL bottle
TYLENOL #2* 1 tablet

If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me.

If you're looking for what to switch, ISMP has a pretty good list that
you can use to start with.

http://www.ismp.org/tools/tallmanletters.pdf

Issue:
Any sorting based on the changed fields will probably be whacked.
Since MT uses ascii values of the characters to sort by, all entries
that begin with lower case will be at the very end of your lists unless
you change your sorts.

example:

DEMEROL...
MORPHINE...
fenTANYL...

This has been fixed somewhat in later versions, but probably not as
much back where you are. If this is a problem, you can set up a
computed field that converts everything to uppercase and use that to
sort on instead of the actual field itself.

VAL=@name~$L.TO.U will convert a field to
uppercase

As well as the link Alan Miller sent with ISMP TALLman lettering, there
is another for lower case/UPPER case.
