Good Morning – wondering if there is a way to create a rule that automatically prompts the user for information when receiving a sample.  For instance, if a user is receiving a 24h urine sample, is there a rule that can be built that automatically prompts the user for the urine total volume rather than relying on the user to enter this information in comments?  Thank you!  Nicole

Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

Nicole,

I knew it would that easy of an answer. I didn’t read your request carefully. I now see you are requesting the volume when receiving the specimen.

Unless you train the users to receive through E/E Requisition, then a CDS would be helpful.

Sorry.

There is no way to do this in 5.66 C/S but it is part of 5.67 C/S. It does cause issues with automation lines though if you have one.

You can’t do anything for the receiving screen, but it sounds like you really need it when the lab is placing the orders.  So, this can be accomplished by using a CDS screen, making it required, and entering the information on the requisition screen.  However, this information would only then be seen when the specimen # is pulled up in the enter results routine, but this information won’t be seen in the receive routine.  For in-patients, you can always go into the EMR to find that information as long as it’s been entered.

Hope this helps,

We have also had the same problem, as I’m sure many labs do.  It had gotten to the point where we were calling floors numerous times a day, that we started compiling data to show the chief nursing officer how bad the problem was.  From this data, we then moved forward with using a specimen collection label that could be placed on the specimen itself.  The label had a place to affix the patient label that is printed from ADM in addition to a place for the specimen date & time of collection, the specimen source, the collector’s first and last name (to be in compliance with CAP in case we had to go back to the original collector i.e. for blood bank specimens), and a box that is checked to remind staff to collect the specimen in the computer.

This was the best method we could come up with to correct the problem.  It seems to be working well so far; it’s been in place for about 3 months now.  We still have to call the floor to have them collect or order the test(s), but it definitely has decreased the # of calls.
