I am working on our CAP Standards and have been asked a question for the
L. How often and how do you document the verification of calculations
that are used within your lab system for patient testing. I believe
this question is from the lab general check list from CAP. I thought I
would ask around to see what processes other labs have in place to meet
the requirement. Thanks-Have a great weekend.

Having just reviewed the standard, the requirement is only every 2 years, but I think our policy is every year. Obviously, any calculation changes, test changes, new equipment, and updates require re-verification before moving changes LIVE.

.. and do you/anybody have any slick way of doing that? .. Or do you pull a lab activity report to find a specimen with that specific calc result, then use that to validate manually? Times Xn calcs?
I have been doing this, and putting them on a spreadsheet- not an efficient process. Would appreciate any alternate suggestions! TIA!

I built them into worksheets (HEMECALCS, CHEMCALCS) with examples of
what the calculation 'should' validate as built into the test header
portion of the worksheet. The Techs then plug in those numbers and make
sure the calcs are correct.
I built the calcs into profiles called HEMECALCS, CHEMCALCS, etc. to
make the ordering process more efficient.

Attached is a magic report that I wrote for our chemistry department to
help find calcs that need to be verified. It just finds a list of
specimens from the test mnemonics listed in the macro. Of course you
would need to substitute your mnemonics for mine. Hope this helps.
