Good morning L'ers,

I would like recommendations on a cheap, reliable, supported scripting tool that clients use with Meditech. Any comments are welcomed.

Thanks

Never tried but don't see why not. Can use all the keystrokes plus mouse
pointer. Focus can be setup on cursor position as ScriptLink. Can open
your Meditech session automatically from the script as well.

Hello all,

Who is responsible for the "Provider Dictionary" at your facility and
why?

Over the years we've been able to get by with a loose set of guidelines
and unwritten understanding of who does what. However, with turnover
and the ever increasing complexity of our applications, its time to
develop a written policy on this topic.

I've met with key people from each department that have a vested
interest
in the accuracy of this table. Surprise, surprise, none of them wants
to
own it. Many of them make entries into this table and own the accuracy
of
certain fields that if left blank, can ruin their day. You see where
I'm
going with this?

Just as the B/AR tables are owned/maintained by our Billing Systems
Analyst and her dept. head, the LAB Telecom and tests dictionaries are
owned/maintained by the LAB department, the Pharmacy dictionaries by the
Pharmacy, etc... their just might be an ultimate owner of this
dictionary as well.

Some people make the assumption that because it sits in MIS that it
belongs to MIS. My belief is that MIS just happens to be the
"center-hub" dumping ground for tables that will be used in various
apps.. Sort of the way the Directions dictionary was part of the
standard Pharmacy dictionary menu for so many years and was okay there.
But if you look where it's actually stored and with advanced clinicals
it is now part of many apps. Its another one of those tables that comes
under scrutiny regarding who should be making edits and how to keep it
safe.

Is it I.S. at your facility?
Is it Credentialing who only deals with your in-house docs?
Is it Finance?
Is it Medical Records/HIS?

Not that we'd jump on board with a practice just because everyone else
is doing it; but we'd like some advice as to why your specific dept. or
group is responsible. Perhaps it's a good reason that we haven't
uncovered yet.
Perhaps all this effort being spent in finding the right home for this
critical table, will end up on my lap. ;-}

Thank you in advance,
Scott

St. Mary's has struggled with this as well. We have come up with a

If you want to turn off the "not me" answers and turn on the "I'll do it",
tell them that only the owner will have access to modify it. (Get the
backing of your CEO/CFO).

IMHO, it should by physician staffing. They should be responsible and most
importantly accountable for the accuracy of the data in the provider
dictionary. IM should support them fully in this wherever possible, but IM
should not be the ones doing data entry here.

Hi Scott,

We have four departments responsible for this dictionary. Medical Staff
Services/Credentialing is responsible for all 'on-staff' providers;
Clinical Infomatics/IT/IS is responsible for all staff entries that are
entered for e-sign only (RD's, RN's, PT's, etc), LAB and BAR share
responsibility to enter out of area providers being entered to attach to
an outpatient order. BAR has NPR reports that review for entries
missing necessary provider numbers and adds those as needed, CI/IT/IS
has NPR reports that review for entries with invalid phone/fax numbers
that will effect telecom and add/correct those as needed. It has worked
well for years this way.

Good luck!

We have 2 sites and with Medical Staff services at each facility.
However, it is only 1 Medical Staff department that is in charge of the
Provider Dictionary. If anyone finds a discrepancy, they notify MS to
fix.

Hi Scott,

Good luck!

Hello All,
I am new to this site. At my hospital, the Provider Dictionary is under the ownership of Medical Staff. It is appropriate since they do all the credentialing. They are responsible for the upkeep and inactivating physicians that no longer have privileges (since they are the ones in charge of this). Anyone who needs to have physicians added into Meditech would send a request to Medical Staff.
Hope this helps.

I personally would opt for a vendor who can support your MEDITECH Scripting, since that is what you want the tool to do.

Support should be a critical element in your choice & the support should know MEDITECH.

There are a number of unique characteristics of the MEDITECH screens and key stroke emulation.

Boston Workstation is the one I use and have with HBOC & MEDITECH since 1991.

They have never let me down. If something needs to be added to the instruction set in order to get a Script to work - it will be !

Cheep is not the answer.

Good Luck

I completely agree.

Our facility utilizes the Boston tool as well and not only is their
support knowledgeable and helpful, but the tool is HIGHLY customizable.
I have thrown all kinds of scripting needs at them, from running excel
macros, to Crystal reports (using I people tools) all the way to
building a customizable downtime application. All of my 'desires' so
far have been met and surpassed!

Fred:

I couldn't disagree more.

I have extensively reviewed (including demo trials) of the three most
popular scripting tools for Meditech (from Summit, Boston Workstation,
Iatric Systems).

They all offer very capablle tools. All the vendors have track records of
knowing Meditech very well and supporting their products well.

The tools have different styles and different features. Those
are factors that should be considered in the selection process.

However, cost should definitely be a very important consideration
in one's selection process given the similarity in the capabilities
and support these tools have.

I agree - Cost is an important factor - ROI is the goal.

When you look at ROI you are considering not just the cost of the software but the cost of support for the software.

However; you also need to roll into the ROI your cost to use the software.

If the job can get done faster, because of the support knowing the issues, it becomes a savings and part of the R return.

Also the ease of use and therefore the ability of more people being able to write more scripts to save more time is another part of the R.

I wrote my own tool, many years ago and it didn't cost anything other then my spare time at home. I did it as a mental exercise. I didn't get as much bang for the buck because I don't get any knowledge base with it.

There are and will be many good tools and the more talented programmers will be able to use them but from speaking and consulting on Scripting for all of these years I have found that the tool is the smallest part of successful scripting.

The ability of the Scripter to understand the system they are Scripting and understanding the need being served by the script and all of the potential variables are the hard parts.

Any additional help along the way that is going to make the projects more successful and the R greater is a plus.

Again, this is just my onion. I like to see individuals succeed and I think the Scripting Tool Vendors with MEDITECH experience offer the potential for user success and a greater R.

Same at our facility. The only issue we have with this is it seems that IS finds out about the newly arrived physician at 4:59 PM on Friday afternoon. Usually no paperwork no nothing! Just a name needing access to Meditech!

We have been working with our Medical Staff Coordinator to fix this issue.
