This is really not a meditech question but how do you handle collecting on
self pay inpatients. Perhaps, before they leave. We have a large number
of self pay patients that have a high bill and when they are discharged you
can't get in contact with them. What process do you have in place for self
pay patients?

Thanks
Amy

Hi - We have case managers on the floors that try to work on getting the
self pay patients enrolled in a Medicaid program. If they aren't
eligible, they are referred to our financial counselors who try to
either collect or fill out a financial assistance application before the
patient is discharged. Joan

Hi, Amy,

It usually takes visiting while the patient is inhouse to get anything going. Financial counselors can meet with the patient to determine financial eligibility for Medicaid, disability, charity, etc. Some hospitals have a caseworker from DFCS on site to help with the Medicaid.
