Good morning-

We are Magic 5.66, but taking delivery of 6.1 in October.  In prep for that, we understand that FDB is the only formulary option for 6.1.

Question#1 – Is that correct?

Assuming FDB is the only game in town, we are also trying to decide if their optional “AlertSpace” offering is a good idea.  In a nutshell, it sounds like drug/drug, etc. alerts that are tailored by the end-user to reduce alert fatigue; just concerned about whether or not the end-users will take the time to use as intended.  So, for anyone who has experience with 6.x/Alertspace:

Questions #2 – Have I accurately described what AlertSpace does, and – more importantly – have you been pleased or disappointed in how it has worked out for you?

Thanks in advance,

Even if you had a choice between FDB and Medispan, I would choose FDB hands down (Micromedex is no longer a player). AlertSpace is the only way that you are going to reduce alert fatigue, and it works well. Also, when dose range checking is required at some point (I am thinking stage 3), you really need the dose range modifications that AlertSpace offers. So, it will reduce drug-drug interaction alerts and false positives on dose range checking. Let me know if you have any specific questions as we were one of the early adopters of AlertSpace and have been using it since it first came out.

Joe,

We are in the same situation and if you are taking the readiness package from Meditech, or plan on using their new ambulatory service module (sorry, don’t know the name yet), then yes, we have confirmed with Meditech that they only support FDB.

We watched a simple demo of the Alertspace product last week.  It looks like a very nice product with much customization, including drug-drug interactions, allergy checking and dose range checking.  It will even help reconcile unit of measure discrepancies for dose checking.  For many sites, probably too much customization.  The question I think you need to answer is whether the hospital is willing to take ownership of it.  There is an important governance piece needed and I can see a significant time commitment to using it.  Ownership could be the pharmacy clinical coordinator.  You have to weight how much you think it will be utilized vs the cost.  It is just short of doubling the FDB contract cost.
