Find yourself asking or answering questions on the "L" consistently?
Why not earn rewards for it?!

MEDITECH Connect launched a new rewards program today where members
can earn points by doing things like posting or responding to
questions within MTC's targeted group forums. It's our way of saying
thank you to those who contribute to the MEDITECH user community.

Take a look at the rewards we're offering..!

1,000 Pts: iPod Shuffle
2,000 Pts: Bose IE2 Headphones
2,500 Pts: iPad Nano
4,000 Pts: iPad Touch
8,000 Pts: iPad 2

For those new to the site, every group forum consists of members who
have a background in that particular topic. Once a question is added,
all members of that group receive a notification, giving you the best
odds of finding someone who can help. With a community of over 3,000
members and growing, we're doing everything we can to build a network
where you can find real answers.

Take a second to try it out by posting your "L" question within a
group and start earning rewards today!

I post a lot of NPR R/W answers to the "L" and I find that list more convenient method of communication, so I am going to stick with this forum instead of Meditech Connect. If you want the chance of NPR assistance from me, you will need to ask your questions here.

In theory, a group forum is more targeted and might be better. In practice, getting a notice of a question via email, then going to the site to read it (or read the rest of it), then answering it, then getting a notice that a response has been posted, then going to the site again to read that posting, is a bit too time-consuming and cumbersome for me. I'd rather see the posting on the general "L" mailing list and respond directly with "reply" or "reply all".

Hi Joe,

While I respect your opinion and the "L" for that matter, we're
looking to expand its basic functionality as an electronic mailing
list.

Aside from the concise organization of discussion posts by group and
by member, the main advantage provided is the ability for users to see
MEDITECH Connect discussions easily regardless of their post date.
Unfortunately with the "L", you're hoping that the person who has the
answer sees your post that day.

The best example of this is here, with a post that was added to
MEDITECH Connect back in April and still has a healthy discussion
including status updates on the topic. This type of activity
unfortunately isn't possible with the "L's" current functionality.

http://meditechconnect.com/group/meditech-pharmacy/forum/topics/6-x-the-ambulatory-drug-dictionary-where-did-i-miss-the-boat

While my intention is not to downplay the "L", we did want to
highlight just one of the ways in which we're using social media tools
to allow MEDITECH users to share their experiences (and reward them
for it now too!).

Best,

MEDITECH Connect

Hi Charles,

You ask some good questions--I actually put this in an About Us
section on the site for awhile but I guess it's not the most visible.

To answer your question, the site is actually run by myself--I'm the
"MEDITECH Connect Blogger" for those of you who that have seen our
blog. I've always referred to a group of us since there have been so
many folks who have helped create the network.

As far as my background, I don't work for a Consulting firm, vendor,
MEDITECH or anyone else for that matter. I'm a completely independent
former Analyst who used to work for MEDITECH. Given my experiences, I
saw a desperate need for members to be able to connect through new
mediums and that's the sole reason why this ever started in the first
place.

In order to keep the site free for users, we got together with
sponsors like Iatric Systems to help with costs. That being said, we
are a completely independent company and have no ties to any of these
businesses outside of that. Every vendor that participates is not
only helping sponsor the network, but they're making a statement that
they want to reach out to their current MEDITECH customer base via
their group on the site.

Going back to the anonymity piece--I frankly have been trying to keep
it simple and the best way to do that has been to stay out of the
spotlight. I can tell you that MEDITECH knows who I am as well as our
sponsors, so I'm certainly not hiding. Truthfully when it comes to
the network, it's not about me, it's about our members and this is the
best way I know of right now to keep it that way. Will that change
down the road? Probably, but that's how things are for the time
being..

So to give you an ending to my long-winded answer, my agenda is to
find ways to help MEDITECH Users connect for free.

Hope this helped clear a few things up.. :-)

There definitely needs to be more transparency.

All of these gifts exceed the value of what an employee at our hospital can accept from a vendor so it would not do me any good to "earn" points.

To me if the volume is low – High School list with a dozen messages a year – email is better;  if volume is high and I’m not interested in 90% of the messages, forum with classifications and threads is better.  But the biggest factor for me is Newton’s 1st law – if I’ve been using something, I’ll continue to use it till it’s really lacking, and if something is new they’d better be something really great to bother logging in.  Sad, but true.

Regarding the initial subject line: “Posting to Meditech-L vs Meditech Connect” does it have to be either or?  I think the “L” is a fantastic resource and has been quite helpful to me on many occasions.  Joe’s NPR expertise is invaluable!  I answer or add my 1.5 cents whenever I can, although usually only to the poster.  I haven’t made use of Meditech Connect but I envision it as more of a blog than a resource list like the “L” so I am not sure why there isn’t room for both without creating an either or scenario…

I think each has its value, the “L” for quick answers (depending on what the issue is and who is available) and great resources of folks around. Meditech Connect, for me, an avenue for getting education from very knowledgeable users, consultants, and so on! Learning NPR for example, the format on Meditech Connect is more geared to that, versus the “L” is geared toward getting a specific answer. For me, that’s where the value is for both, I use both, but readily admit I use the “L” the most, to help and get help.

In my case, it doesn't matter than you're not a vendor trying to sell me something.

We have a limit for any single entity giving something to an employee or department. It doesn't matter if it is a vendor or a charitable organization, we can't take anything more than that amount from a single entity.

This plays havoc with things like giving a presentation at a conference and getting our registration for free, because it is almost always more than the amount allowed by the hospital.

Hi Beth,

Thanks for clarifying - there's actually an option to the Rewards program.  If, for example, you qualified for an iPod Shuffle and you couldn't accept the gift, we would make a donation of $50 to The Jimmy Fund supporting the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

If you think there would be any problems that we haven't thought of with a donation, then definitely just let me know.

Thanks!

Rewards program ?

Is it only me who gets annoyed when sales people ask to join their
rewards program ?

Why do we need a rewards incentive to post on the Meditech L ?

Isn't it reward enough that there are people willing to help you ?

Hi Jim,

MEDITECH Connect has always been run by people who wanted to donate their time and experience.  We just wanted to do something nice to give back to those users who contribute without seeking anything in return.  This isn't a sales pitch.  We're not trying to sell anything, so I'm struggling to understand your complaint...

We created a member rewards program so we could give back to members either with a gift or a donation in their name to The Jimmy Fund.  Where's the issue?

Thanks..

Hey folks,

I think most of us believe it’s time to deep six this thread. We can all agree:

1.       Meditech-L is a great and proven resource.

2.       Meditech Connect has the potential to be another great resource.

Meditech Connect person – If you will continue to “sell your wares” on the L, it is advisable to NOT say anything negative about the L. Keep your messages in a positive note and maybe you will get more attention from the L users.

My 2 cents…..

Nick

Both are great resources, I'll agree. Unfortunately for some of us, our internet access is controlled to the point that much of the Meditech Connect (and some of the Meditech website) content is blocked to us, making the Meditech-L our primary workday communication tool.
I am rewarded with each response I get to questions, and from the appreciation of those I assist. Incentives for any point system would interest me more if it were something like x hours of NPR ( or other product) training (even remote) that could be awarded to the facilities for multiple staff to benefit, which then should eliminate the concern with individual gift limits (I would hope).
Just my 2 cents for a Friday morning...

I feel we need to put the insult of being offered a bribe to post aside. I think I understand why they might have made the offer. Increased visibility helps drive traffic which then strokes egos or increases the value of the site in the eyes of the companies willing to fund the continued existence of the site. Not the most subtle cry for attention, but definitely it beats begging or whining.
Solve problems by bringing like-minded people together to work on them. We have available to us two tools which differ in execution and work to the same end. Within our network the Meditech-L is comparable to Twitter while Meditech Connect is Facebook.
Is one better than the other? What is "better"? I choose not to decide. It's Friday, this can wait for another day.

Please do NOT confuse this offer with the Meditech L mailing list.  This has nothing at all to do with the Meditech L or your membership and participation in the L email list.  This offer was made by another entity who chose to use the Meditech L to reach a vast number of Meditech users.

The Meditech L mailing list owner or volunteers have not collaborated with, endorsed, condoned or condemned this offer.

The Meditech L remains an independent, free source for anyone, member or not, to request and receive information related to Meditech.  The L exists through donations and volunteer efforts and has done so for 20+ years.  As long as there are members who find value in the Meditech L, it will continue

As always, the L owner, Gil Arnold, and volunteer moderators Julia Carter and Lorna Johnson, are well-known, public individuals dedicated to bringing the L members the best possible service in the most simple, convenient and economical manner.

Thanks!

I feel the Meditech connect is very helpful and resourceful for discussions, but on the part where we are looking for issues that require Joe's and other end users expertise in programming logic for npr or attributes it is better handled on the Meditech-L.

Julia, Gil, Lorna,

My sincere apologies if there was any implication that the L had any relationship with MEDITECH Connect other than being a different free independent venue for users to connect.  I made an assumption that a large portion of L'ers are either subscribers or, at the very least, know of our distinct venues, so I apologize for any potential confusion.

I checked the number of active google group L members earlier today.  For those 886, give or take, L members who actively receive emails, I would like to make it clear that the Meditech L is a completely separate entity and that the MEDITECH Connect rewards system announced last week is not in any way linked to discussions in this venue.  It was solely an announcement.

Per Julia's email, if the L is a venue that works for you, I encourage you to continue to use it.  My intent is really to just add another option and leave it to you to find which avenue works for you.

As someone who has used the L in the past as an analyst, I'd like to say thanks to Gil for bringing users together meaningfully over the past 20+ years.  The changes to mtusers.com were definitely an upgrade!  Although we take different approaches, I can definitely relate to having a strong desire to find ways to allow users to connect...

Respectfully,

MTC

Here’s my 2 bits on this, the season of L drama (as it seems to be).

Surely there are php/python/whatever M.Connect uses gurus out there that can incorporate a ticker into the Meditech Connect website with the running messages from the L…

Clicking one of the messages would open up a web-based message form that would post back to the L as Meditech Connect, but that would also include your personal Meditech Connect “footer” information, including name, public info (hospital, etc) and a link back to your content on the Connect site. This form would post as well the original and your reply to your own personal blog area of the Meditech Connect site (or to a group there, whatever).

I agree with Joe at this point. Also, who is behind Meditech Connect? You never see a specific name and I have wondered what the agenda is. Is it supported by a consultant group, one vendor, multi vendors, Meditech? Sure would be nice to know who is supporting it and what the true agenda is. There definitely needs to be more transparency.

Subject: [MT-L] Posting to Meditech-L vs Meditech Connect

WOW.  I have been deleting these messages but finally had to chime in.  If anyone recalls, I began a site with a colleague Kevin Boldt called MeditechTalk a few years back.  Our theory was that the ability to find messages can be updated a bit.  It was successful and is still out there.  This discussion has only made me go to Meditech Connect and cancel my membership.  There's no comparison to the content, and frankly the lack of advertising here — well, what else do you need to say.

Sorry Donna, this is just gone to far.
