From our Pharmacy Director:

We use code corp. scanners and are very pleased with them. We also have
lots of drugs in our dictionary that only have 10 digit NDC numbers. I
could be misunderstanding the issue, but from what I know of NDC's, the
missing zero is not a big problem. If it is missing in the bar code, it
is always from a specific location in the NDC string. This is not a
problem for variation in manufacturer. If the same generic drug is made
by different companies, the other characters in the string will be
different. The missing zero in a string does not matter.
When we first got the code corp scanners, they had to "program" them
somehow to work for us, but I think that was just to read the different
types of bar code. Meditech will accept 10 digit bar codes. We use the
"quick add drugs by bar code" function to verify our daily orders and
sometimes have to add another bar code whether it is 10 or 11 digits.

Thanks to all so far. Apparently in further talks with my pharmacist,
there is a big issue with using a 10 digit ndc number in the alternate
ndc numbers.
While it appears that this would allow a medication to be scanned, and
it would match up with the 10 digit alt ndc number, which in turn would
then match with the 11 digit actual ndc number, this would not be the
true indicator of what was administered to the patient.

It appears that there can be several manufacturers of a drug. Each
manufacturer would have it's own NDC number. From what he is telling me,
we have to absolutely identify that the medication scanned and billed is
the exact medication that is administered.

So if an 11 digit ndc number is for medication xyz, but this medication
is manufactured by abc and def, then abc and def will have different NDC
numbers (10 digit) than what the 11 digit NDC number is that identifies
medication xyz.

While it is possible to have meditech match up the 10 digit product from
manufacturer abc to the medication xyz, apparently the problem in
verification and billing is that the bill has to show the correct
medication, from manufacturer abc.

So we have to be able to show from first scan into pharmacy, through to
administering to the patient, through to the required 11 digit for
billing, that it is the same number all the way through, that the
product ndc number was scanned all the way through. And subsequently
that is the ndc number that is billed.

To sum up, what our pharmacist says is the 11 digit ndc number is what
has to show from the very first scan all the way through the system.
Since the manufacturers are only putting 10 digit ndc numbers on the
products, and that is all that is showing up in the scans, we have to
find out how others are making it so from the very first scan the
correct 11 digit ndc code shows, according to the 5-4-2 requirements.

Ron,
Joel is correct. When you scan in all the items in your pharmacy, if
the NDC scanned is not equal to the primary NDC, it is simple to add it
as an alternate. It doesn't matter if it's 10 or 11 characters.

NDC's are actually supposed to be 10 digits:
http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DevelopmentApprovalProcess/UCM070829

McKesson published a good reference for pharmacies on NDC #'s a couple
years ago:

Why try to get to the 11-digit format? The Alt NDC/Bar Code Identifier
field in Meditech is 10 or 11 digits...
