I'm looking for anyone who has a BACTEC 9240 analyzer interfaced. We're being told by someone from BD that Meditech handles only demographics, not results. That is totally illogical to us!!

Thanks, Judy Hill

Hi Judy:

We purchased and tested this interface, but never did implement.  The Meditech interface for the Bactec 9240 interface does both download demographics and upload results.  It sends the result "BACTEC_NEG" or "BACTEC_POS" to the first pending paragraph type test that is ordered on the specimen, and will not transmit to a prompt on a culture type screen.  It also will not transmit to a test that already contains a default "NP" result.  We ended up using a BD Epicenter for data management of the Bactec and the Phoenix, and implemented an interface for it.  Unfortunately the current Meditech Epicenter interface does not upload Bactec results (only demographics); we have considered requesting a custom, but so far have not pursued this.  The Bactec can't have both an Epicenter connection and a direct to Meditech interface, so we went with the Epi.  I'll be happy to answer any other questions -

They are right as of my knowledge. We use the same BACTEC 9240
interfaced with Meditech and only Patient Demographics cross. Our
Meditech is set up, however, to default "No Growth" everyday at noon
unless we interrupt the default with a positive gram stain result. Then
the default result is halted and the process for positive BC results is
followed with manual entry of results. After so many days of "No
Growth" results, the final "No Growth" is reported.

Judy, this very similar to what we do as well. We had tried the
interface and didn't like it's capabilities. We have a default answer
at 24 hrs and one at 5 days, I think.......

Our lab uses the automatic no growth function also. The patients automatically flow to the blood culture worksheet and update day by day, until the fifth and final day, at which point in time the computer autofinalizes "No growth 5 days". Whenever a positive culture is detected, it is called as a critical value and manually updated in Meditech.

We a CS5.5 site.
