I have a question about assigning file names to files I generate out of Meditech CS 6.1 Report Designer (or Report Writer).

We are in the process of migrating from magic to CS 6.14.

In magic, in an NPR report macro I could use the following to “build” a file name for use when ftp’ing via MIS scheduling…

“filename”_@.today_c.location_.txt”^/ZFTP.TITLE

Notice above how I have incorporated into the file name the location the user selected when running this report (c.location).

In the 6.1 MIS scheduling routines (either NPR or MAT), I only have the option of keying in a free text file name at the path prompt when scheduling via MIS.  I don’t see any way to incorporate into the file name elements such as c.locaton or b.date, e.date, etc.  I asked Meditech about it and they said my only option is to supply text of some kind in the path prompt then click the “unique” button so the system will add the current date/time to the end of the file name.  They specifically told me that in a 6.1 system, I can’t dynamically name files written to folder paths the same way I could in magic.

So, my question to the brains on the –L is this… do any of you know a way to do what Meditech is telling me can’t be done?!  I hope that I am missing something obvious because without the ability to control file names, I have 20+ 3rd party vendors to whom I feed data files that will have to adapt and some of them are already telling me no way sorry can’t accommodate your new simplistic file name.

Thanks…

For NPR Report writer you write a “sched.report” macro that puts the desired file name in slash.

MIS.SCHED.RPT calls this macro if it exists.

See this tip on our website for details:

Note, setting permissions to get the MIS bgk job machine able to write files to a share can be tricky, and MT’s official advice is “don’t do it, have script run on BKG job machine to distribute files”

I am not aware of a way to do a similar thing in Report Designer.

Hi David,

I know there are windows programs that can watch a folder and rename a file and/or move it. It’s been a while since I have used them but just Googled and found a few. Could you set up your report designer report with the name and use one of these to rename the file with the date or whatever else you need in the file name. Most of these allow you to use system variables in the name. I believe some can even read the contents of the file if it is a txt file. You may even be able to pull data out of the file to use in the rename. Thanks Doug
