Rabbi L. Garelik (rabbi serving the community in Brussels (Belgium)
asked whether there is a source to approve the giving of a name to a
male child prior to the bris, when the bris has to be delayed because
the child is sick and the parents wish prayers recited on behalf of
the child to specify him by name.
Many poskim permit this, it is quoted by Rabbi Mordechai Halpern in
the journal Assia (vol. 4 p. 236, 241) in the name of Rav Moshe
Feinstein zatzal, and the satmar Rebbe Zatzal. On the other hand,
Orchos Rabeinu (p. 366 no. 15) says that the Steipeler zatzal did not
approve of this. There are is a very full discussion of this question
in the book Halachos of Pregnancy and childbirth by Rabbi Yisroel Dov
Webster shlita (published by C.I.S.) which I edited, and in the
kuntres habiurim at the end of the Sefer.
