Very nice tho cheaper in some ways

Luxo makes good stuff. We've used their lamps for many years, actually decades. We keep buying more.
This is our first time w/ their 5 diopter, first time w/ their LED.
LED is two strips of small LED's - very bright, unobtrusive. Brightness is controlled by holding down the on/off pushbutton switch on top-right of ring. Impressed w/ it so far.
Two things are 'cheaper' compared to their 'old' lamps (of about 20 years ago) -- the mounting bracket, instead of being all metal, is about half plastic - cheap feeling, probably will break before the older all-metal brackets. Come on guys, this is not that expensive an item to make all metal / real quality. Entire light seems to swivel easier on the plastic bracket, which is not necessarily a good thing because if there is an slight tilt to the base or what it's mounted to, zing, your lamp magically swivels back to the nadir all on its own. Very frustrating. We'll soon resort to sanding the
too-smooth plastic mount, or else stuffing some kind of something abrasive in there, I'm sure.
Second 'cheaper' thing is the incorporation of plastic at the knuckles, which were before mostly metal. Gone are the external springs (presumably they're now inside the long, lanky metal structural pieces) and gone are the knurled thumb-tightening screws.
Overall, very good so far, probably 'worth' about $400 -- we'll see how the LEDs hold up, how the crappy plasticky components hold up -- and given my acerbic reviews you know I'll follow up with the harsh take on Luxo's newest bestest.
