Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) was estbalished in the year 1962. Intially the institute was named as Nehru Hospital after being inaugurated by Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru on July 7, 1963. Initially the institute was established under the Government of Punjab. Later, the administrative control of the institute passed on to the Union Territory of Chandigarh. The institute was established as an autonomous institute under the Act of Parliament in 1967.
