This week marks the 47th anniversary of the signing of the Medicare and Medicaid Acts into law. As we reflect upon this accomplishment, we here at NHeLP have continued to emphasize the need for health care coverage for many low-income, yet uninsured individuals. Although some have mistakenly believed otherwise, the recent Supreme Court decision still requires that states expand Medicaid eligibility in 2014 (but limits the HHS Secretary’s ability to withdraw all federal Medicaid funding from states that fail to do so). For further details, see NHeLP’s, “Q & A #1: The Supreme Court’s Decision on the ACA’s Medicaid Expansion.”
As a result, NHeLP has released a new report, “50 Reasons Medicaid Expansion is Good for Your State.” This publication provides more than 49 interesting and useful pieces of information on the potential of the expansion that will be helpful to health advocates, policymakers, elected officials, and local Medicaid mavens. Some of these reasons include:
· #12: The Medicaid expansion will help hospitals caring for a disproportionate share of low-income and uninsured people.
· #19: The Medicaid expansion will reduce adult death rates.
· #25: The Medicaid expansion is critical for women.
· #40: The Medicaid expansion means jobs.
Stay tuned to NHeLP for more on the Medicaid expansion and the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
