The Kaiser Family Foundation’s (KFF) recent fact-sheet, Health Coverage of Children details the importance of Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for low-income children. Medicaid and CHIP currently cover about a third of all children (and over a half of all low-income children). However, KFF determined that about eight million children are still uninsured, but eligible for these programs. Among other findings, the fact-sheet shows that children are more likely to be uninsured if: they are racial or ethnic minorities; their families are low-income (below 200% of the federal poverty level); or if their families do not have employer-sponsored health insurance (or cannot afford the premiums).
Stay tuned for further NHeLP updates on the importance of Medicaid and the Medicaid expansions to underserved populations.
