Health Equity: What’s Ahead for Medicaid?

The Medicaid program ensures that some of the nation’s most vulnerable women and families have coverage for the health care services they need.  The health care law, as written, expanded Medicaid to all individuals below 138% of the federal poverty level (about $29,000 for a family of four).  Starting in 2014, approximately 15.1 million uninsured adults will gain coverage under Medicaid expansion.

But the Supreme Court curtailed the federal government’s power to require states to expand their Medicaid programs, and governors in at least seven states—Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Nebraska, and Iowa—have said they will refuse to carry out the expansion.  As a result, low-income women and families in those states would be denied desperately-needed health coverage.  On Thursday, August 23, from 2:00 to 3:15 p.m. EDT, Raising Women’s Voices is sponsoring a call to help us understand the legal implications of the Supreme Court decision, the health equity provisions of Medicaid expansion, the potential state fiscal implications, as well as challenges and opportunities for state advocates in advocating for Medicaid expansion. Our expert panelists will include:

Sinsi Hernández-Cancio, Health Equity Director, Families USA

Deborah Reid, Senior Attorney, National Health Law Program

Nicole Tambouret, Project Director, Community Catalyst

Join us and bring your questions about what the Medicaid expansion would mean for women in your state and how to pressure state officials to carry out the expansion.

Please RSVP to health...@raisingwomensvoices.net or MSpa...@blackwomenshealth.org by 12:00 p.m. EST on Thursday, August 23, 2012 to receive call-in information.
