 MEDIA FELLOWSHIP (2010)
MAMTA Health Institute for Mother and Child
Location: Bihar and Uttar Pradesh
Email: fello...@mamtahimc.org
Last Date: April 25, 2010

MAMTA – Health Institute for Mother and Child, New Delhi, invites proposals from Journalists from English and Hindi print media for “A Fellowship Program for States of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in India under the European Commission Supported Project “Improving Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) of Young People by Influencing Age at Marriage in India, Nepal and Bangladesh”.

BACKGROUND:
The fellowship programme aims to promote public education on Impact of Early Marriage and Early Pregnancy on young people’s sexual and reproductive health. Effective communication is essential to influence knowledge, practices and behavior within a family and simultaneously build consensus on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) issues. This will serve as one of the tools in the multi pronged approach towards creating an enabling environment for young people so that they practice safe behaviors and live healthy disease free live.

The proposed fellowship shall translate itself into issue based write ups / op-eds fostering support and building public opinion.

The fellowship provides a unique opportunity to investigate and analyze deep-rooted practice of Early Marriage and associated SRH concerns at the programme intervention sites of MAMTA in two states namely Ganoda, Hardoi, CVhitrakoot and Siddhartha Nagar districts in Uttar Pradesh and Nawada, Nalanda, Vaishali and West Champaran districts in Bihar.

It would help in building perspectives on identified SRH concerns of young boys and girls in a broad age group of 10-24 years. These concerns of young people are often underestimated and hence denied in almost all cultures across the nation. Of all, young people who are unmarried are the worse affected who often are forced into marital obligations unprepared and left to learn about health, social and economic complexities only through self-experiences and sufferings.

The longstanding casual approach to young people’s health concerns reflects a poor state of affairs vis-à-vis six cross cutting issues in our country.
