I never got to the point of working on a logo for MediaCampLA, so all ideas are greatly appreciated.

I was reminded of this when I discovered that I set up a MediaCampLA Twitter account but didn't have a picture for it.

Twitter account is @MediaCampLA

Cool. Thanks for putting that together.

I like the thought and speech bubbles.

Could we get a video camera or some representation of video and audio in the mix along with some sort of social media representation like the bubbles.

I would like to give some representation that this is about all sorts of New Media.

I prefer darker, more jewel like colors, but I am open to a wide variety of colors.

The screen on the right is representation of TV which is why I choose it. The colors can be changed. If you have specific color in mind (Pantone, Web Safe colors) please make suggestions.

Don't know how to represent an audio bubble except for a round bubble to be like a reel of tape. I ideas?

Oh, to me that is a speech bubble due to the tail leading off to the left. (LAUGH)

I think camera, microphone, generic iPod/MP3 player, TV Screen would be good. Need some sort of generic icon for social media, too.

Eric - One of these gave a 404 error. Can we legitimately use the logos
of organizations in the logo our ours? It is not journalism so fair use
is not a consideration. We are trying to brand the event with our our mark.

Doug - I was trying to be consisten using speech bubbles (to showcase
the exchange of dialog part of the event) the items would be interesting
if we could create a bubble from their shape, but I am not so skilled
and would it be too corny (and yes, that was me that asked that
question.) IMO a logo is about the event no so much the content. A
brand is simple. But I am still open to see something else that will work.

I am sure we will come up with something. As you have seen, my "logos" are usually text-driven, as I am not that great at graphic design. As we get some others involved maybe something will work its way out. I'll put some thought into it this week while Joe is gone and I have a few more minutes to concentrate on things.

I like the idea of using speech bubbles. Time to get the sketch book out. Maybe if I can come up with a basic design someone else can execute the digital final.

I was looking through some other MediaCamp logos and several used the BarCamp "blog" as I call it. (SMILE)

I think this is in the spirit of BarCamp, so I would not be adverse to that. It does seem a bit difficult to fit additional theming along with the BarCamp logo as it is sort of an odd shape.

I was just looking at a series of B&W icons representing a video camera, microphone and film reel to incorporate into the design, too. I couldn't find a good social media one, but the image I have in my mind is the typical iconic "people" with circular head and square body and/or including a small iconic speech bubble as Mitch was describing.

I have attached a very quick sketch of my idea. The small icons would be a video camera, microphone, speech bubble etc. Mainly black and white although I can see the world MEDIA being a darkish blue or something.

What does the flame represent? These icons are static and boring. They are very old school. The phone/pad are the latest iterations and not represented. The concept of merging tech is not indicated either.
If there is a style you must conform to, so be it. The chasing flame wasn't there at the BarCamp I attended in Santa Monica so I don't know when these became a standard. If you wish to stand out, think outside the box. If you don't, don't color outside the lines.

I like using the BarCamp blog as the flames on the "C". That is a unique idea.

I got to thinking that we will also need a square format that reads in Twitter-size avatars and such. I was working under the idea of

MC
LA

in the colors from my mock-up.

Just another design element to consider.

You could also have the blog and the letters overlaid on the blob, to keep the BarCamp theming.

the flame has been associated with the barcamp idea since the beginning... kinda signifying the idea of sitting around a campfire sharing ideas...

to me it means this media camp idea is associated with the massive community around it, the ideas and practices that govern a barcamp, and the whole unconference movement, to lose it should also mean loosing the camp idea and coming up with a property all of our own

the BarCampLA events at both Mahalo and OTX did use the flame in their designs, but any other Santa monica camps I am not sure of.

I like the simplicity of icons, although these are NOT the icons I would use in a final, just examples I found online and in webdings.

The flame is a BarCamp logo that is often manipulated to match a given conference. Typically someone familiar with barcamp already would note the logo and understand the event is being organized in a similar style. I would guess it was created to allow some sort of cross-branding between events, even thought they are all locally organized. The BarCampLA is typically amended with a palm tree silhouette  IIRC.

I would like to change the green to the some shade of orange like you had earlier for the flames, to get the campfire theme again. I never really liked the BarCampLA green anyway. (LAUGH)

Rosanne thought adding the hash tag made it a bit too busy.

I like the tag line. Could we use a slightly thinner typestyle?

I feel we are getting close to something we can go with. We can always tweak it as we go along, but I think this says what we want it to say. Once we get a "final" let's think of a square format of that version, too.

Good to see us progress through this so quickly! Makes me feel good that things are starting to move forward.
