Markus,

Several months ago at the Dojo I mentioned my desire to get a New Media Unconference off the ground here in LA. I have interested a few more organizers and we are in process of looking for a venue which can be had free or cheap for such an event.

I remember that you have contacts at Blip.tv (and probably other New Media companies) and I was hoping you could offer an introduction to see if they might be interested in sponsoring MediaCampLA with either a venue or monetary support.

We have a web site set up for basic information at http://mediacampla.wordpress.com and any interested people can contact me directly at dou...@welchwrite.com. I have copied my co-chairs for this event, Liam Johnson (@editorliam) and Eric Francis Harnden, Founder of the Independent Filmmakers of the Inland Empire. to keep them in the loop and also give you links where you can find out more information about them.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Hi Annie and Dina,

I'd like to introduce my friend and colleague Douglas Welch.  I've known Douglas from various Los Angeles new media/tech group meetups and events like BarCampLA and even the blip.tv LA office house warming.

I'm still smiling from that evening :)

We've been talking about a new media unconference in Los Angeles for some time, and lately Douglas has been banging the drum, organizing and getting people involved.

We have a web site set up for basic information at http://mediacampla.wordpress.com and any interested people can contact me directly at dou...@welchwrite.com. It would be so cool to see something as wonderful as Pixelodeon again and I know you folks are hiding Steve Woolf somewhere ;)

Is this something you can help us bring about?

At very least, it would be a great way to get you folks to come back and visit LA.

Best regards,
Markus Sandy

Dina,

Thanks for the quick reply to Markus' introduction. We can connect up further in September once your schedule opens up a bit. Stash this message away until you have the time to give it more of your attention. (SMILE)

We have 3 organizers right now who can handle the basics or organizing including PR, sponsors, etc. Our largest need at the moment is a venue and then once that is established, a date. We would gladly accept any assistance you can offer, but you needn't feel you have to carry the entire burden of organizing the event, we have some great people who have stepped up to make MediaCampLA happen. I have copied them on this message to keep them in the loop.

Our "dream scenario" is a basic venue with central area for Intro/Outro/Lunch and general conversation during the day and a few rooms/spaces for breakout sessions and presentations. As with most unconferences, we don't need anything fancy, just something functional. Wifi access would be great, but not a showstopper if it isn't available. We foresee a day-long unconference running from 10am-4pm or 5pm.

Thanks for any and all help you can give us to make MediaCampLA happen. I have been wanting to give LA it's own New Media unconference for a while, so it is a great pleasure to see some movement in that direction.

We can talk further at your convenience. I will make a note in my calendar to get in touch again in mid-September.

Thanks!

Hi Markus,

I love it.

I'm tied up on internal deadlines until September - can we pick up the conversation that second week of September?

And can you let me know then the dream scenario?

Like the idea - just limited bandwidth to organize (but we do have a cool space)!

I find 100 people to be a good round number as it allows for enough interaction throughout the day, but a small enough group that people really get to know one another. Of course, this all depends on the physical space available., but that is probably be the attendance I would shoot for.

Space: 1 central area for opening session, hanging out, lunch etc., 3-5 rooms for presentations and breakouts (breakouts could also happen in the central area or outdoors, depending on the location and the weather.) With 100 people I don't foresee needing more than 5 sessions/rooms per hour.

Hi All,

I'm pretty sure we could secure the CSULB campus for you if you're interested. If you'd like to come down and look around, just let me know. Fall semester starts next week, so I'll be there on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We have a variety of rooms with data projectors and wifi.

Depending on how MCLA works out, I think it might be really fun to do it again... MCLB or MCSB (South Bay)
I was on the CSULB campus for the BIL conference a couple years ago and was really impressed with the facilities there :)

Dina,

I am touching base again about organizing MediaCampLA, a new media unconference. We first emailed back in August and you had some deadlines in September, so I hope everything went well for you.

We are still looking for a venue and sponsors for MediaCampLA and were hoping that Blip.tv might like to partner with us to make it happen. Please let me re-introduce my co-organizers for the event.

I have copied my co-chairs for this event, Liam Johnson (@editorliam) and Eric Francis Harnden, Founder of the Independent Filmmakers of the Inland Empireto keep them in the loop and also give you links where you can find out more information about them.
Hope all is well with you and yours!

What other groups, like Techzulu, IFIE, etc could we partner with, too?  That would help to drive some interest, I think.

I'll try to try to talk to my former professor and boss Jon Amador, Media Entertainment Arts Department Chair (Formerly Radio/TV/Film) at College of the Canyons to gauge the possibility of securing the University Center as a venue for MediaCamp LA.

Fresh off of AdobeMAX, talking with DMA/LA, there is some interest in creating an "Adobe Camp" in the area.  Note, an "Adobe Camp" doesn't have to be exclusively Adobe.  Also, this doesn't have to be an Adobe Camp, just saying that the managers of DMA/LA might be interested in contributing to the effort in some way.  In the same vein, IFIE would be interested in the same.

There was an Adobe presenter at the Media Camp Liam and I attended in OC, so I don't see this as too far out of the relm.

We can talk more face-to-face on the subject.
