I will throw this out to the collective wisdom of the group, as I am not quite sure how to present it to landlords and hotel managers.
Is there an approach we can develop for hotels and also buildings with empty office space to host one of our camps. My sister has had some success in the Palm Springs area by showing hotels how they can bring in foot traffic to the hotel and restaurants if the hotel offers up a meeting room or 2 for free. LA is a different market, though, so I am not sure how much success we might have with that. The Beverly Garland Hotel in North Hollywood/Universal City came to mind the other day as I have attended events there in the past.
BarCampLA was once held in some recently vacated office space in the AOL Headquarters in Beverly Hills and AOL hosted us in their offices for a DrupalCamp. BarCampLA has also been held in the office of Mahalo and a firm in Culver City. In the early days of BarCampLA, it was held in the warehouse space of Little Radio in south Downtown LA. This space required us to rent chairs and tables and such, but functioned fairly well.
Can someone more savvy than I help me come up with a document/pitch we could send to this type of venue? Are there any places you know where we might be able to make this type of approach. We have a host of empty car dealerships here in Van Nuys that I think would be great for something like this. It seems to me that if we could develop these types of relationships we might have an easier time finding venues in the future.
