Hello Everyone!
After a long time I am posting as we need to revive our discussion
forum for effective medical education unit.
The other day I was having a discussion with Prof (Mrs) S Bose on
different aspect of teaching media and methods. She stressed the need
for sharing information. She had circulated an article on Integrated
Teaching to all faculty through the Heads of departments and sought
feedback with suggestion for curriculur change by 15th April 2009.
I fully agree with her and hereby uploading a file "Death by
powerpoint -the need for 'fidget index' " in the file section. Please
share this with your colleagues.

With regards,

Dr Kuldeep Singh

Hello med-edu group,

The article posted here made interesting reading.
I too ponder over this point many a times and have taken direct feedback from the students . Unanimously they prefer the chalk board method and find the powerpoint slides too distracting and difficult to concentrate on.
That defeats the very objective of the lecture.

The students find it difficult to read and hear at the same time and writing notes is impossible.

I invite others to share their experience.

Regards,
Dr.Jyoti Sanghvi.

Use of Power point presentation cannot be ruled out. There many advantages of Chalk Board method but the limitations are to be accepted.

Power point can be prepared in such a way that at a time only a word or line appears which will catch attention of every one.

Too colorful powerpoint smay distract the attention. One has to really learn to make "Effective Power point presentation". Only practice and experience will make one perfect /near to perfect.

Note taking is an art. I feel students rae forgetting that. Can one think on teaching about proper 'note making'?

Supply of a 'summary/write up' before or after the lecture may substitute the note making.

I don't think Chalk board teaching or Power point would alter the note making habit of the sudents.
