George of the Jungle is a 1997 American comedy film directed by Sam Weisman and based on Jay Ward and Bill Scott's 1967 American animated television series of the same name, which in turn is a spoof of the fictional character Tarzan, created by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Written by Dana Olsen and Audrey Wells, and starring Brendan Fraser, Leslie Mann, Thomas Haden Church, Holland Taylor, Richard Roundtree, and John Cleese. It tells the story of a young man raised by wild animals who falls for an heiress and contends with the heiress's spoiled fiancé. The film was produced by Walt Disney Pictures and was released in theatres throughout the United States and Canada on July 16, 1997. It was later aired on Disney Channel in the United States on December 5, 1998. The film received mixed reviews and grossed $174 million worldwide. A sequel, George of the Jungle 2, was released direct-to-video on October 21, 2003.

While touring Burundi with local guide Kwame and a trio of porters, San Francisco heiress Ursula Stanhope encounters her spoiled fiancée Lyle van de Groot, who wishes to take her home and had hired two poachers, Max and Thor, to track her down. Kwame tells the group of the "White Ape", a local legend of a superhuman primate that lives on Ape Mountain and rules the jungle. The next day, Ursula refuses to go home until she sees the White Ape, so Lyle goes into the jungle with her to find it. The two are attacked by a lion, and Lyle knocks himself unconscious trying to flee. Ursula is saved by the King of the Jungle, George.

After taking Ursula to his tree house home and caring for her, George introduces her to his three animal friends: Ape, the sapient talking gorilla who raised him; Shep, his pet African forest elephant that acts like a dog; and Tookie, a toco toucan who gives him news involving the jungle's animals. George is smitten with Ursula and attempts to woo her; Ursula soon reciprocates his attraction, and her time spent with George makes her no longer wish to return home.

George and Ursula declare their love for each other and marry, with the people of both San Francisco and Africa, as well as the jungle's animals, in attendance. Some time later, the two live in their own treehouse and are raising a son, George Jr., whom they present to the animals from atop Pride Rock.

The amazing trick this movie pulls off isn’t just reassuring its young audience, though. It’s sneakily teaching kids how to watch movies. Keith helps children identify the protagonists (George and Ursula) and the villain (Lyle, set up as the epitome of white privilege and a general boob against a team of Ugandan porters who make a fool out of him at every opportunity). He paces the movie, identifying important moments (“And so, George of the Jungle attended his first co-ed dance...”) and zipping us through what would otherwise be shoe leather for viewers with short attention spans (“The young Miss Stanhope proceeded to spill the beans…very quickly,” Keith says as Ursula recounts her jungle adventures to her parents***** in that fast-forwarded-mouse-voice). These barely noticeable additions ground kids in understanding how movies work by both enveloping them in a created world and pointing out the seams.

It was inspired by the 1960s animated series of the same name by the Jay Ward Studios and starred Brendan Fraser in the title role. A sequel, George of the Jungle 2 was released in 2003.

The film begins with an animated prologue showing George's backstory as a baby from San Francisco who survived an airplane crash in Africa. Separated from his human parents, he grew up in the jungle raised by apes and befriended many jungle animals, including an ape named Ape, whom George considered a brother, and a dog-like elephant named Shep, his "big peanut-loving poochie". 25 years later, George grew up to become King of the Jungle, living in a treehouse a talking, highly intelligent gorilla named Ape (voiced by John Cleese). George now lives on friendly terms with most animals. He is quite clumsy, a tendency manifest in his collisions with trees and his less than secure footing, but takes all mishaps in stride.

Ursula Stanhope is a beautiful, American heiress, reluctantly engaged to marry Lyle Van de Groot, who seems more attached to his fiancee's wealth than to her. On an expedition to Central Africa, joined by Lyle and two men he hired named Max and Thor, Ursula is rescued from a lion attack by a man named "George" (Brendan Fraser). While rescuing Ursula, George accidentally knocks her unconscious on a tree branch and takes her back to his jungle treehouse.

The film was shot in three different locations. The majority of the jungle scenes were filmed inside an empty airplane hanger in Playa Del Rey in California over the course of two months.[1] There, the set was filled with nearly 5,000 plants to create an authenticity. George's treehouse was constructed from steel and plaster. The floors were built upon a thick layer of steel and concrete to prevent the elephant from falling through. Some trees were made with built-in imprints of George's body to create the illusion of him leaving one following a crash. All wide angle shots of the jungle were filmed in the Hawaiian islands. The scenes in San Francisco were filmed there over a two-week period.

Consider, for example, the character of Shep, the elephant. Shep looks like an elephant and is played by an elephant (named Tai), but Shep thinks he's a dog. George has trained him that way. When Shep first comes bounding through the jungle and slides to a halt and sits on his haunches, barking and panting and wagging his tail, I was blindsided by laughter. And when George demonstrates Shep's ability to fetch by throwing a stick (actually a log), the joke only got funnier.

The movie, which is live action and tries for the look and feel of a cartoon, involves a rich American girl named Ursula Stanhope (Leslie Mann) who goes on an expedition in the jungle, hears of a mysterious white ape, meets George, falls for him and spends the rest of the movie trying to get out of her engagement to the society snob Lyle Van de Groot (Thomas Haden Church).

Leslie Mann shares she should not have participated in the lion scene in George of the Jungle. The 1997 Disney movie stars Brendan Fraser as a man raised by animals in the jungle. George of the Jungle is a generally light-hearted film, mostly staying true to its cartoon source material. While it earned a nomination for Best Fantasy Film at the Saturn Awards, the movie was generally met with mixed reviews, maintaining a steady 56% on Rotten Tomatoes.
