Hello Everyone,

My name is Anthony and I got introduced to this initiative after seeing a tweet by Margarita and connecting with both she and Carlos on Facebook.  I'm an experienced software developer with experience developing for Microsoft Windows, Windows Mobile, and the web. I've also been involved in a number of mobile data collection initiatives and have experience building systems to assist field workers in collecting and disseminating information.  I live in Oklahoma.

Most of the mobile data collection systems I've developed have used SMS to both send and receive data.  I've always chosen SMS instead of on-handset applications as it increases the number of handsets that can be used in the field and reduces overall costs associated with purchasing handsets when the number donated doesn't match the number needed.

I'm wondering if this might be something that's useful in the Haitian project? Specifically, I've been working with an open source product called FrontlineSMS which allows you to set up a complete SMS based system for only the costs of a computer, a cheap mobile, and a data cable. The last system I set up, which required the purchase of a computer since they didn't have one, costs less than $600 USD to setup.

Just putting a thought out there. Either way, I look forward to meeting everyone and helping out in whatever way I can.

Sincerely,
Anthony Papillion

Wonderful to see you here Anthony.  Can you do me a favor and post this on www.ideas4haiti.org as well?  We've just partnered with Ushahidi and your talent and idea will get more visibility to other people struggling with the same problem.

Sure thing Margarita!

I meant to do that yesterday and completely forgot.

Not to discourage anybody, but the situation in this case not always
do you have access to a mobile network, not always do u have local sim
cards (extensive roaming charges otherwise) not all type of
information we need can be accessed by sms (eg: xrays, persons
picture). Please stay in contact in case we design a sms feature

Good input.  I think we're all figuring out the boundaries of the problem -- those on the ground have more insight than those of us farther away.

I will strive to organize these design constraints in a one pager on the google group so everyone can see it.
