Myst is an adventure video game designed by the Miller brothers, Robyn and Rand. It was developed by Cyan, Inc., published by Broderbund, and initially released in 1993 for the Macintosh. In the game, the player travels via a special book to a mysterious island called Myst. From there, solving puzzles allows the player to travel to other worlds ("Ages"), which reveal the backstory of the game's characters and help the player make the choice of whom to aid. The player interacts with objects and walks to different locations by clicking on pre-rendered imagery.

Myst marked a segue for the Miller brothers from the kids' games market to adult-targeted games. They wanted to create a graphically impressive game with a nonlinear story and mystery elements. The game's design was limited by the small memory footprint of consoles (the original intended platform for the game) and by the slow speed of CD-ROM drives. The game was created on Macintosh computers and ran on the HyperCard software stack, though ports to other platforms subsequently required the creation of a new engine.

Development of Myst began in 1991.[4] The game's creative team consisted of brothers Rand and Robyn, with help from sound designer Chris Brandkamp, 3D artist and animator Chuck Carter, Richard Watson, Bonnie McDowall, and Ryan Miller, who together made up Cyan, Inc. Myst was the largest and most time-consuming collaboration Cyan had attempted at that point.[13] Cyan took inspiration from games like Zork, Star Wars' mythic universe, portals to other worlds like in C. S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, and the mysterious islands of old literature like the works of Jules Verne.[9] The game's name, as well as the overall solitary and mysterious atmosphere of the island, was inspired by the book The Mysterious Island by Verne.[2]

I copied the markdown text from the examples in Topography into my jupyter notebook and got jupyterlab-myst to render them. The examples do not work in the notebook like they do in the MyST documentation page, except for the Definition List example.

jupyterlab-myst is separate from the Sphinx myst-parser project that feeds into jupyter-book. The common element is the MyST syntax, but even that has extensions that aren't supported everywhere just yet; we're standardising things and building out our JS stack as I write this reply!

Myst was my first PC co-op game. In 1993 my friend Steve and I sat side-by-side in front of my boxy CRT peering in wonder at a game that looked unlike anything else ever made. We walked our way back and forth across beautiful and mysterious islands (well, clicked on static pictures of them, anyway), hunting for pixels to interact with, making notes with pencil and paper, and bashing our brains against a series of ridiculously obtuse puzzles. We never finished.

Journey to Myst island and other stunning locations, called Ages, and begin to unravel the mystery you have been thrust into. As you learn what happened on the island, you will discover that you are playing a key role in an epic story whose ending has not yet been written. Explore deeper connections in these magnificent, surreal Ages, uncover a story of ruthless family betrayal, and make choices that will affect both you, and the world of Myst itself.

I feel like the hatred of Myst has really dissipated in recent years. When I first played Riven and fell in love with it (I had played Myst and some Myst-likes as a kid) Cyan was not in a great state, mostly putting out wonky mobile games and yet more Myst ports. I scoured the internet for Riven/Myst trivia, reviews, retrospectives, and while I found a lot of stuff by fans that was positive, I definitely ran into a lot of myst vitriol and (after I learned to avoid that) discussions of myst vitriol. In both cases this stuff mainly seemed to be written by people who were teens or adults when myst was first released.

You can pull up a walkthrough from the 1990s and still use it to work through parts of the mystery again in virtual reality, or if you want to be extra confounded, you can activate puzzle randomization instead.

recommonmark is being phased out in favor of myst-parser, see Proposal to sunset recommonmark in favor of MyST-Parser Issue #221 readthedocs/recommonmark GitHub . Feedback on the transition would be useful to the maintainers on that issue.

GameTap eventually resurrected the project and released Uru in 2007; it was soon shut down again due to a lack of subscribers. There have been several grassroots efforts to keep Uru alive on fan-supported servers; its current home can be accessed at mystonline.com.

I went to myst lounge for the first time Saturday and it was super packed put the customer service was great. Lily was our server and she did a great job. she was super funny and we didn't have to wait long for anything even though it seemed like they were really short staffed. Definitely coming back for the great customer service.

I was at myst lounge the past weekend and my server Lily was amazing and gave the best service ever. Her laugh and positive energy will have me going back with friends. Highly recommend going to Myst and ask for Lily! Wish I can give her 5 stars plus!

Myst is a first-person point-and-click adventure where the player controls a character known as The Stranger. Magically transported into the world described in the book, he needs to explore Myst Island and solve its mysteries. The game is presented as a series of static scenes where the player acts with the environment by clicking and manipulating objects. There are no enemies and it is not possible to die. Through Myst Island, the game is further divided into mini-worlds set in different ages accessed through different books.

The Good
Myst is a revolutionary adventure game, which wowed 1990s, audiences with its amazing graphics, tough puzzles, complicated mystery and a lack of the sort of graphic violence and gore that was popular in the industry. The Atari Jaguar CD edition is pretty much flawless when it comes to recreating the original Myst game.

The Bad
Myst in its original format, is a game that has not aged particularly well. The pretty pictures may not pretty may not wow a 2021 audience and the pretty pictures do not come with much animation or music. Except for a few Full Motion Video clips, you do not really interact with anyone on the island and the puzzles are some of the hardest ever put into a video game. All of these faults are found in the Atari Jaguar CD edition of the game because it is an exact copy of the original Myst game.

The Bottom Line
Myst is a video game that revolutionized the industry when it was first released in 1993. Modern gamers may not be especially impressed with the game's technical achievements and world building. If you have played the original version of the game, then their is nothing new or improved on the Atari Jaguar edition to justify a purchase.

To convert existing reST documents to MyST, you can usethe rst2myst CLI script shipped by RST-to-MyST.The script supports converting the documents one by one,or scanning a series of directories to convert them in bulk.

Some reStructuredText syntax will require you to enable certain MyST plugins. For example, to write reST definition lists, you need to add amyst_enable_extensions variable to your Sphinx configuration, as follows:

There is a small chance that rst2myst does not properly understand a piece of reST syntax, either because there is a bug in the toolor because that syntax does not have a MyST equivalent yet.For example, as explained in the documentation, the sphinx.ext.autodoc extension is incompatible with MyST.
