Controlling coil current - touch control

Hi - I am trying to control the current supply to a Mechaduino . Here’s the context... I have a stick attached to the Mechaduino spindle. The stick is moved in a vertical plane toward a vertical solid surface. As soon as the Mechaduino senses a rising resistance at a specific r-angle, because the stick is now pressing against the surface I want to cut the current so the spindle is free. The stick will then rest against the surface. At a later time I want to re-engage the coil current so I can a new r value - the Mechaduino moves the stick away from the surface.
Is this type of control possible? And if so, how is it done? Many thanks in advance...
