Hi everyone,

I am very pleased to announce the opening of a relaxation centre as part of our ME/CFS Centre redesign in Second Life! Dianne Elton, one of our own members with ME, built the entire area herself AND will be conducting relaxation sessions weekly (see below for details).

We hope that this new facility will be of benefit to people with ME/CFS. I really think that guided relaxation is a hugely beneficial part of recovery from ME/CFS. It calms down the sympathetic nervous system, which is in overdrive in ME, and activates the parasympathetic system. It also calms and quietens brain chatter and gets us into the "being" instead of "doing" mode. There is a large and growing body of scientific data to back up the benefits of guided relaxation and meditation.

Here is what Dianne has to say about guided relaxation and its benefits:

"Guided relaxation relates to pacing.  Pacing is a key strategy in managing ME/CFS symptoms to enable us to live a consistent life style and avoid those awful crashes.  Pacing is a strategy in which we try to achieve a balance between rest and activity. An important part of pacing is adopting energy conservation practises.  This is where guided relaxation can really help.

Many people think of activities such simply having a quiet time, or listening to music, as relaxing.  We may consider relaxation something we do naturally without any special techniques.  Guided relaxation is very
different.  It quietens the mind and releases physical tension in the body. Heart beat and breathing slow and your mind and body become deeply calm. Guided relaxation is a systematic method of relaxing the body with the aim of restoring physical and mental strength.  The effects of 10 minutes guided relaxation can be more profound than a couple of hours sleep."

Dianne Elton is a long time user and teacher of guided relaxation and has set up the relaxation centre as part of the new ME/CFS Centre redesign.  She has agreed to run weekly relaxation sessions and will play guided relaxation over the music stream. She has built the area in line with the specific needs of people with ME, making it easy to move around.

I urge you all to come along to a session and give it a try! It's really a beautiful, quiet spot and Dianne has done a marvelous job.

So Proud of Dianne!

What time would the meditation be in Ireland's time? Still not great at figuring out the time changes...

Thanks
Corina
