The act that led to the unravelling of the first World War was one of homegrown terrorism. The Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated in Sarajevo in June 1914 by a 19 year old Serbian student, Gavrilo Princip. The archduke was in Bosnia Herzegovina to direct the Austrian corps manoeuvres there. Shortly after his death, the Austro-Hungarian empire declared war on Serbia.

The threat to businessmen and politicians from revolutionary terrorist groups was very real in Italy in the 1970s. Here, a young Silvio Berlusconi (who fell into both categories) is pictured during that period, with a revolver visible on the desk behind him.

Timothy McVeigh leaves a county courthouse in 1995. He was convicted of having bombed a US federal building in Oklahoma city which killed 168 people. 19 of them were children, who were in a daycare centre at the front of the building. McVeigh was executed on June 11, 2001, exactly three months before his act was overtaken as the largest terrorist attack on US soil. Reuters

All crop dusting flights across the US were grounded after 9/11, as it became clear that terrorist hijacker Mohamed Atta had enquired into the operational aspects of the planes. He and other 9/11 hijackers had also taken flying lessons at the Airman flight school in Norman, Oklahoma. Reuters

Most of the United States' 30 AWACS, based at Tinker, have been flying around-the-clock surveillance of U.S. airspace, especially over New York and Washington, since the September 11 terrorist attacks. The planes' crews watch for suspicious aircraft and provide coordination for the roughly 100 fighter jets, out of 25 bases, also protecting U.S. airspace.

"This has never happened before, that NATO has come to help defend our country, but it happened in this time of need and for that we are grateful," President Bush said. "Together, we're building a very strong coalition against terror, and NATO is the cornerstone of that coalition."

Italian Western comedy in black-and-white. The movie intended to be a parody of the American western as even the title shows, being a hybrid between the original title of the movie The Oklahoma Kid and its rendering for the Italian audience, "Il terrore dell'Ovest".

On February 26, 1993, a bomb exploded in a parking garage of the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City. This event was the first indication for the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) that terrorism was evolving from a regional phenomenon outside of the United States to a transnational phenomenon.

The danger of extremists and far ideological motivation is certainly not constrained to the past, as counterterrorism in America continues to be an important consideration to keep U.S. citizens safe from a variety of terrorist threats, and to increase global terrorism preparedness.

The following timeline lists attacks and acts of terrorism against the United States and Americans living either in the U.S. or abroad, as listed by international terrorist prevention and national security agencies in Washington, D.C.

There have been efforts to combat and bring more awareness to the troubling realities of racism within the international soccer world. In October, the Italian soccer federation declared consideration of employing advanced listening devices used in anti-terrorism operations to identify offending fans. The launch was slated for March 2020. Not long after, the president of UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin, publicly criticized international soccer's lack of effort to tackle racism. FIFA leaders strengthened their disciplinary code on racism, doubling their minimum ban for racist incidents to 10 games per offense, fines for clubs starting at 20,000 Swiss francs (approximately $20,000), and inviting players to make victim statements at disciplinary hearings.

Still, it was quite amazing that billions of people could observe a disaster happening in a small city on Missouri's border with Oklahoma and Kansas. The website of the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, for example, featured a video labeled "Joplin devastata," offering a front-row seat to the terror of a menacing funnel alongside the astonished shouts of tornado chasers.

The political interest in security issues has resulted in a shift of research priorities to include also in agricultural research in order to increase awareness of the impacts of plant pathogens and the diseases they cause. Security-related issues are being financed particularly in the U.S., but also the European Union is considering security a high priority within its VII Framework Programme. Since the development of crop biosecurity as a field of research is relatively new, an ethical examination of potential conflicts that may arise in this area of research is appropriate. Therefore an open international dialogue may contribute to the development of collaborative research programmes and of supporting infrastructures for crop biosecurity and may offer the tools needed to defend the agricultural sector against crop bioterrorism.

Country music personalities have always been an essential element of the USO's entertainment. In the early years, performers like Gene Autry, another notable Oklahoman--actually Gene Autry, Oklahoma, is in my district as well, Mr. Speaker--Patsy Cline, and many other acts from the Grand Ole Opry have traveled around the world to entertain our troops. Today, performers like Neal McCoy and Lee Ann Womack have all gone to Iraq to entertain our troops. However, few celebrities have visited our troops fighting the war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan with as much fervor and frequency as Toby Keith.

If I had to choose one piece of wisdom that has guided my practice, it would come from a young adolescent I met in a United Nations refugee camp in Sinje, Liberia. She was an unaccompanied minor from Sierra Leone who had been separated from her family and other villagers during the chaos and terror of flight from combatants. She faced a future that offered little hope of returning home or of finding a warm welcome elsewhere.
