Mark I. Choate is an associate professor of history, having joined the department faculty and the European Studies program in August 2001. He teaches courses on Europe since 1914, Italy since 1848, World Civilizations since 1500, military history, colonialism, international migration, European fascisms, terrorism and counterterrorism, and strategy. Professor Choate is the author of Emigrant Nation: The Making of Italy Abroad (Harvard University Press, 2008). Emigrant Nation was awarded the Council for European Studies Book Award, and the Marraro Prize, in 2010. If I had to choose one piece of wisdom that has guided my practice, it would come from a young adolescent I met in a United Nations refugee camp in Sinje, Liberia.
