I just met with Pasi Miettinen, President of Sagewell, the thermal-imaging company, to share the reasons why Melrose chose not to participate in their program at this time (not enough time to do effective outreach before it warms up, concern regarding their business partnerships, and privacy concerns that were not effectively addressed in their initial communication). He appreciated our concerns and directed me to the Green Acton thermal-imaging sign-up site which is excellent: http://greenacton.org/challenge as well as the Cambridge HEET site: http://www.heetma.com/content/sagewell-inc-and-heet-thermal-imagery-project. They just rolled out a very successful program in Medfield as well. Boston is on hold for now. It's not clear what type of program Sagewell will be offering next fall/winter, but I suggested that they meet with the Melrose Energy Commission in early fall to educate us further and see if we could tie it in to the Melrose Energy Challenge.
They are working under the premise that the millions of dollars spent in many states (including MA) on residential energy efficiency doesn’t net enough results and that drive-by thermal-imaging is a more effective and affordable way to identify the houses and homeowners with the greatest need for weatherization. His challenge is finding a way to fund it going forward.
