When considering possible database solutions, I think it may well be
worth thinking about using db4o. It is fast, and uses your object
model rather than a rdb set of tables, making development much
easier. My only concern, previously, was its GPL licensing, but I
note that they have their dOCL license, which allows software which is
already licensed under, e.g. Apache (like us) to continue with their
existing licensing agreement.

(Oh, and there are both Java and .net versions available out of the
