I saw this male Checkered White along the edge of one of the sunflower fields that had been treated with herbicide. There were at least 15 cabbage whites in the area. From a short distance this was hard to tell apart from the cabbage whites. Checkered whites seem uncommon in MD. This is the first one that I have seen in Maryland. You can see the wear on the edges of the wings.
Last time I saw one was in the agricultural areas (the Redlands) west of Florida City and Homestead in the winter time where they are relatively common. (25 years or more ago.).
