Tom Raub emailed me today with info that he had a Small Tortoiseshell (
Aglais urticae) in his Strasburg PA garden on Saturday. Has not been seen since.
It's an absolutely pristine butterfly so unlikely a migrant or port stowaway (Strasburg is in the middle of PA near Hershey).
This has also been a very good summer for the congener Peacock (Aglais io) in New England, especially VT. Related pheonomenon?
