On July 4th my wife Geraldine and I visited the Sand Flats ponds in the Catoctins in Frederick County.  We spent most of our time at the north pond (closest to the parking lot), and it was full of odes.  Most were common species, but we did see at least one Golden-winged Skimmer.  Perhaps this is a known spot for the species, but it was new for me in Frederick county.

Here is a list of what we saw.  There were numerous individuals of all species seen, and all were seen in the first pond, except as noted.  The second pond was also active, but we spent less time there.

Skimming Bluet;

Common Green Darner – several;

Comet Darner – at least one in southern/second pond;

Golden-winged Skimmer – at least one. I have photos I'll put in iNat;

Spangled Skimmer;

Slaty Skimmer;

Ornate Pennant – many, mostly in grass at southern edge of north pond;

Carolina Saddlebags

As many of you know, this and the entire Catoctin area is a great place to explore!

Good Oding!

Ornate Pennant but no Calicos? It's usually Calico Pennant that is the dominant pennant here. I think Ornate is only known from AA county ...
Did you venture down the trail to the Edwards' Hairstreak meadows to see if they are still in flight?

Sorry - I meant Calico Pennants.  I find them to be the prettiest, most 'ornate', of the Pennants and just grabbed the wrong name.  I'm bad with names - which is probably why I became an engineer and not an entomologist or botanist!
