On my journey to and from Sainsburys for click & collect on Friday on the London Road I noted 6146 and 6149 in service on 71 group. (6149 was outbound, 6146 inbound)
Whilst following 6146 back from M20 J5 into Maidstone on the A20 I realised the rear end look a trifle “odd” and it took me a moment or two to realise that this has a rear destination display (dot matrix, Hanover or similar) immediately below the upper deck rear emergency door/window. The black surround glazing appeared to me contiguous with the rubber window surround – ie a lower portion of the totality. This comprises a destination (nearside) and route number (offside). Destination was set “MAIDSTONE Larkfield” “71”. Interestingly this was a continuous display and was not the annoyingly alternating display of route information with Co-Vid safety messages.
Further into Maidstone, having overtaken 6146 at Grace Avenue it appeared from what I could see in my mirror (and this is a bit suspect as I was actually looking where I was going!) that the front display is slightly less deep – not quite a single line but not far off – than we are used to – and it did not appear to be scrolling dual messages. Can’t be sure re the latter point.
I cannot recall when we last had Arriva or M&D double deckers operating in Maidstone with rear destination information. YKT Fleetlines maybe? Someone will correct me I’m sure.

Thanks. As I commented to Richard Lewis the 101 positioning within the surround of the (top) of the lower deck rear window makes the view of the display very different from the lower part of the upper deck emergency door / window on the Wright bodywork. (That’s my excuse anyway!!)

In Tenterden this morning 6139 was waiting at The Vine for return to Maidstone on the 12 and I took the opportunity to photograph the rear to show the high positioning of the destination equipment.

Rear destination displays are a feature of the Sapphire specification vehicles usually used on the 101, as this wiki photo shows
