Further to Dave Burrin’s earlier post, this is the other double decker on the Thanet Loop today.

It’s since occurred to me that with the diversion still on in Margate (and it is still on!), the need for single deckers on the clockwise Loop services is not a problem, as the route is being diverted away from the East Margate bridge.

Apparently two double-decks on each of 34 and Loop as 8 was restricted to single-deckers because of arrangements around the closure of Sturry level crossing.

Having used the 8 yesterday from Margate to Canterbury, it seemed that the use of the long E200 MMCs actually made things worse on the diversion - there were at least three points where it was a struggle to get around, and in any case the Triangle and Rail Replacement buses using the same route were double-deck...

That confirms the theory I expressed to my (less-than-interested) wife this morning, that I couldn’t see the point of single-deck substitution for double-deckers when they were all about the same length and width, unless there were issues with low-hanging trees, as there certainly aren’t any bridges on the diversion, are there?

Definitely no bridges, just rather tight on the corners down the hill from Broad Oak for the most part. The E200 MMCs are well over 11m long, of course, so take up more of the road on the corners than the usual Scanias would.

The corners at the bottom of the hill, just before you reach the level crossing, appeared to be a particular problem.

Having driven through Broad Oak on Saturday morning, I can confirm that it was a bit tight especially when I had to squeeze in order to let a Stagecoach "Unibus" and Travelmasters that were following each towards Canterbury, pass me.
I also saw that ALX400's were the double deckers in use on Route 34, while MMC YN16WVD 15264 was seen at Margate Station operating the BK1 to Tilmanstone Salads.

I’m assuming from this that buses were diverted via Broad Oak during the recent weekend closures of Sturry level crossing, though one report suggests that 8A diverted via Wingham on the Saturday.

There has always been a preference not to send MMCs (either single-deck or double-deck) over the Broad Oak diversion.  Hence Triangle was wholly stocked by older vehicles on Sunday 5th (at least).  I’m not clear whether the reason is trees, corners or potential grounding.  Maybe someone local can clarify?

Nicholas

confirmed that everything was diverting via Broad Oak (8 and 8X, Triangle and rail replacements, anyway) - and certainly that the (ex?) Unibus E400s were much in evidence among the entirely older E400s on the Triangles that I saw.

I can confirm that on Saturday 11th (at least), Route 8A was indeed diverted via Wingham and the A256 and I drove passed a "Loop" bus on the 8A near Wingham Wildlife Park.
