As noted in the April Invicta, Metrobus' new service 500 sits just over our formal boundary in East Sussex - the boundary passes to the Kent side of the major towns and A22, whilst this goes through/along it.

Nevertheless, those local to the area may wish to note a "roadshow" to launch the service next week: East Grinstead, Uckfield, Eastbourne and Hailsham are involved, each having either a morning or afternoon slot on either 6th or 7th May.

Details from the company here: https://www.metrobus.co.uk/500-roadshow

Discussions on social media and associated responses from apparently informed sourced suggest the service will be operated with 'new' E400 MMCs, similar to those introduced on the Regency and Coaster routes last year.

Go-Ahead have taken a number of what appears to be ex-stock E400 MMCs recently (Oxford are getting four of them), so I wonder if these have been sourced similarly.

That said there are also some on order for Go South Coast, so they could have been tacked onto that order - either way, the body numbers will confirm one way or the other...

Although it has been put about that Brighton & Hove 54 is replaced by this new route (and by CTLA new service 245), the registration for the 54 has been published as a revised timetable from 9th May, rather than as a cancellation.

Does anyone have a solution to this apparent puzzle?

The Metrobus website explicitly states that it is replacing 54 and 261; ESCC are rather vaguer but imply it (and we discovered last month that their Word and online versions differed in some details).

Just a guess, but I notice the registration for the 500 only shows up on the Bustimes registration feed * as between Gatwick and Uckfield (i.e. the new bit). Might it be possible that B&H/Metrobus have revised the route, timetable and number of the former 54 registration to be the 500, and as is not unknown for N&P, they've not updated the new service number? The service would then be formed of PK00012133/175 (new) for the northern section, and PK00012133/173 (former 54) for the southern section as a split registration.

* If anyone is unaware, very basic service details can be found by clicking on the "PK" link at the bottom of the page for each operator's list of services - by way of example, Arriva K&S is here: https://bustimes.org/licences/PK0000208... those with a close eye on our publications could also manually adjust the hyperlink to fit the desired license.
